Labour council in Cambridge has installed squat toilets said to be favoured by international visitors and are charging users £1 per visit.
The public toilets - which include three 'squat-style flushing toilets' - on Silver Street, opposite Queens' College at the University of Cambridge, cost Cambridge City Council £1million to build.
They replaced a 1980s block that was repeatedly flooded by the River Cam, which runs next to it.
The council said the style of toilet was 'preferred by some international visitors'.
Locals have since criticised the 'crazy' £1 charge to use the toilets, which opened last month.
Heather Boyd, from the nearby village of Orwell, told the BBC: 'I certainly think if I'm going to spend £1, I'm not going to squat as well. That is absolutely crazy.'
'I'd much rather they built just a normal set of toilets and charged nothing, than one really slick one and charged a pound,' the 60-year-old added.
Meanwhile, one resident took to social media, writing: 'My grandmother's great achievement as a member of the London Townswomen's Guild (not a jam and Jerusalem organisation) was to get the penny in the slot fee for Ladies loos abolished.

“International Visitors” Has Brit speak changed? Are they no longer “Asians?”
And now we can no longer accuse them of not doing squat!
Reminds me of my NG unit participating in an Exercise in Korea. There were porta potties. One did not use them at night without using a flashlight. Otherwise one could be unpleasantly surprised at the ‘gift’ left on the toilet seat by a Korean with poor aim.
Worse than that can’t Asians learn to use a standard toilet? 🚽
Happy to see they adopt the best characteristics of their conquerors.
I don’t know about England, although I’ve been there quite a few times, but when I was in France this summer, it cost me a fortune to go to the bathroom. It’s a euro per time and I go at least six times a day I think for men they should charge like $.10 cause we’re so quick or charge $.10 for number 1. One euro for number two. Lol.

International visitors prefer to squat? For real?
Well, that’s better than the old hole-in-the-floor set up, or people squatting in the street.
My very first experience with a squat toilet was in Tanzania. I had never heard of them...never seen one...or seen a picture of one...in my life until that moment. My shock and confusion was off the charts.
I spent 4 months in Paris in 2014. I only experienced one squat toilet. It was kind of disappointing there weren’t more.
Have you ever seen the space age toilets they have in Japan? They do everything for you...including playing you a gentle tune to put you in the mood.
I never imagined this one but worse was the American airports running expensive plumbing to install foot baths for the taxi drivers.
Much easier if you’re wearing a BURKA!
During the World Cup, visitors were pleasantly surprised that they could use a public restroom in the U.S. for no charge.
