The governments of Japan and the United States agreed in 2012 to move more than 9,000 of the nearly 19,000 Marines stationed in Okinawa more than 2,200 miles east to Guam, a U.S. territory.2 This process—finally begun in 2024—amounts to a withdrawal of forces from territory the United States has pledged to defend, and a de facto retreat from the most pernicious threat: the People’s Republic of China.
National defense strategies from multiple administrations and both major U.S. political parties agree: China is the greatest threat to the United States and its interests.3 Few issues generate as much robust bipartisan support as finding policies to counter the Chinese Communist Party, including sustained support for the first island chain strategy.
But deterrence is predicated on having forces in place before the start of conflict, and the ability to project naval and air power requires advanced bases logistically proximate to the objective.
To deny China the seas and skies throughout the first island chain, this U.S.-led coalition must do so with forces that sortie from within it, not from the continental United States. Forces that must project from the U.S. homeland will arrive too late, if they are able to arrive at all, once China starts interdicting and disrupting the more-than-6,000-mile sea lines of communication that run from North America to the first island chain.
Combat-credible U.S. forces stationed forward in the first island chain are invaluable for access, overflight, and influence.6 Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines are far more likely to work together toward a U.S.-intended aim if the United States is present and has enough skin in the game to make the fight winnable.

I say we let them have their own navy again. Just so long as they promise to not form another Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
The US shoulders too much of the load, imo.
I was at Nagasaki a year and a half ago.
There were two very modern frigates under construction across the harbor from us, and two older destroyers getting extensive refits.
We need lots more of that sort of thing.
Suppose Japan wanted a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere? (I'm sure they don't). But just suppose.

Agreed. Japan is finally stepping up. Past time for Japan to defend themselves, and Europe too.
Is anybody talking about the reasons why the Japanese don't want them there? It has to do with the epidemic levels of black servicemen raping local girls.
But I don't expect the Navy to talk about that or even acknowledge it.

Well, because the first incarnation of that rather mouthful of company name caused a lot of... turbulence in the ‘’market’’ at the time.
The Greater East Asia CPS was 95 years ago and was hurting our ally China.
Things have changed.
60 or more years ago it was jap teens raping and castrating little white American boys on Okinawa and the home islands.
We didn’t demand they leave as we should have.

Never heard of that. If that happened, I imagine the military would very much want that covered up. That could have turned into a seriously ugly situation.
But my best friend's mother is from Okinawa, and that's how I knew about the rape problem. And it isn't just a few. It's decades of it.
My much older cousin was there in the military with family. It happened at the baseball fields in the restroom. Not just once. It was desperately swept under the rug by US and jap authorities alike.
Lots of people just hate each other. The japs are some of the most racist people on earth.
Yes, I've picked up on that too.
The new conservative leader of Japan is pretty hot to fight China. That helps increase deterrence.
