The farther today's Democratic Socialists advance, the less they resemble reformers—and the more they embrace policies long associated with communism.
It is not difficult, these days, to see the neo-communist flipside of “Democratic Socialists”—once they find power.
Indeed, the more the ossified Democratic Party claims that its growing cadre of socialist renegades are not really socialists, the more they act like—and even appear comfortable being called—communists.
With every new policy they propose, the socialists have been dropping the pretense that they are not Marxists.
How about declaring capitalism a failure?
All the socialists now do that—and even Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom has also started agreeing that “capitalism as we know it doesn’t work either.” Oddly, Newsom himself, a multimillionaire and a beneficiary of arch-capitalist Gordon Getty’s largesse, seems to have done quite well under capitalism.
Confiscating private property?
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani claims he will do just that if New York’s landlords, in his opinion, are poor custodians of their own property.
Dismantling the U.S. Constitution?
Almost all Democrats have long called for destroying the 238-year-old Electoral College. And now the socialists openly brag that, when they take over the Democratic Party and then the nation, they will, as good Bolsheviks, go much further: destroying the Senate, destroying the Pentagon, destroying prisons, destroying the police, and destroying our borders.
And they want to take over utilities, break up or absorb corporate agriculture, and own major industries. Apparently, socialists believe that with a snap of their fingers they can destroy key elements of the U.S. constitutional order. Would these “socialists” even resent their agenda being called “communist”?
They also seem to have taken their cue for such radical change from “mainstream” Democrats—for example, Kamala Harris. Now in her third vain bid for the presidency

Not according to Bill Maher. He still thinks it’s a slur. Not that his opinion matters.
I think the label like “communism” are completely useless.
Our system is defined by the Constitution, and beyond that - the way and extent to which it is enforced. It’s not enough to simply call it a “Republic”. Even @Self Governing Constitutional Republic” is not enough - every detail matters.
Alternative proposed forms of government like “Communism” need either to spelled out and detailed in a similar fashion to our Constitution, or to be rejected out of hand for lack of definition.
Communism, capitalism, Free-trade, Democracy, Socialism - all should be dirty words if they are offered without full definition.
Democracy can be tyranny of the majority.
Capitalism can be tyranny if oligarchs and monopolists
Communism can be tyranny of the bureaucracy
Even MAGA or America First can be tyranny if its leadership goes astray.
Any system of government can be tyranny if it’s not accountable to the people who delegated their authority to it. The name means nothing.
Maher is right on this topic, at least this one.
There is no such thing as a “democratic socialist” as it is an oxymoron, even VDH is using it. I should make a graphic of this as there are AI programs that are out now I should try.

The left’s attack on America is multi-pronged.
Along with the pols going after the destructive changes in the government, there is a concentrated effort to erode America’s sense of society.
The mass importation from socialist countries, the emptying of the prisons. The tolerance of violence and the ‘anything-goes’ attitude towards sex, including rape and child abuse..
So many acts that defy common sense are in reality just assaults on our free will and basic morals. we are being WORN DOWN!
Like the Nazis, they know they can throttle off this nonsense once they are in power. For now, it is just a tool, being allowed to happen, made to happen, so we as a nation weaken and submit.
Later, when our minds, our children, our education system is under total control, all this silliness will go away in a flash. The homeless, the deviant sex lifestyles, the burning, the crime, the violence, all will come to a screeching halt under the iron fist of merciless socialism.
For now, it is promoted as warm compassion.
Which is a trap, a trap of the Marxists, and you’re only abetting it, honestly. Capitalism is a derogatory term invented by Communists/Socialists to deride freedom. A better term for that economic philosophy is a “free market” but who can call a truly free market evil? Oligarchy and Monopoly are antithetical to a free market, so saying that either are *part* of a free market or “Capitalist” system is being just as disingenuous as the Marxists/Socialists.
And, honestly, even though “free market” in that context is perfectly fine and frankly fully descriptive in the way you say we need, it’s limiting that instead of describing it as a “free market” we should simply describe it as freedom.
Now, to be sure, you don’t get something for nothing and you can’t have freedom for free. Freedom takes work, and the sausage making often isn’t pretty. But don’t get caught in the trap of on the one hand ACCEPTING terms like Capitalism then saying they are unsuited to purpose - because deriding freedom as Capitalism has scored the Marxists/Socialists exactly the prize intended.
A slur? It’s an accurate description of the entity that thinks the non-productive useless, lazy, deadbeat class somehow deserves the fruit of another man’s labor.
I’m old enough to remember the phrase, “kill a commie for mommy”.
I don’t know whether i have gotten more cut and dried or whether VDH has become more conciliatory and measured but I find myself arguing with his podcast more often than not these days.

The other error (or deception) is to connect monopoly and oligarchy with capitalism in the first place. There is NOTHING more monopolistic than a Communist society and in Communist and Socialist societies the oligarchs are selected by the point of the point of the gun as opposed to trade practices. So stop attaching monopolies and oligarchs to either Capitalism or the free market. That’s furthering leftist propaganda even if you don’t think it is.
Fascist is about the only political slur that registers with the Left. Start calling it Fascist Socialism, and they might pay attention.

The media do not get to whitewash the bloody history of communism. Marxists in all their self named pseudonyms need to pointed out and young people taught the true history of the devastating ideology. They never learned in the Howard Zinn propaganda manuals.
