U.S. general warns Pentagon he lacks sufficient forces to protect Israel
The Washington Post ^ | August 1, 2026 7:00 a.m. EDT | Dan Lamothe

Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the head of U.S. European Command, sent written notification to senior Pentagon officials saying that without another Navy destroyer he will be forced to choose defense of the United States “homeland” over that of Israel, said the officials, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the correspondence.

A U.S. defense official said Grynkewich’s notification appears consistent with past outreach to the Pentagon from the military’s top generals when they see certain risks that require Washington’s consideration. This can occur, the official said, as commanders compete for finite resources and weapons.

The Pentagon declined to comment. U.S. European Command did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment.

The general’s warning comes at a tenuous moment in the five-month conflict, as near-daily attacks have resumed following the collapse of peace talks between Washington and Tehran and the operation’s intensity has drained U.S. supplies of key defensive weapons.

The Navy has been particularly taxed, as the Trump administration has directed a blockade of Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The standoff has stymied the movement of Middle Eastern oil and other commodities through the narrow waterway, upending the global economy.

U.S. naval destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea have been employed as a part of Israel’s defense for many years. The vessels, equipped with powerful radar and armed with an array of missiles, have downed missiles aimed at Israel not only by Iran, but by Houthi militants in Yemen that are equipped by Tehran.

European Command is central to this mission, as it coordinates military operations in the Mediterranean. At the same time, its forces must remain ready for any Russian incursion into territory protected by...

That’s a risk we are willing to take.

How is it the only country you can think to ask about is Israel?

Because that's the one we're faced with defending in lieu of ourselves according to Gen. Alexus Grynkewich.

Let's try this on a few other countries, shall we?

Did we commit our nuclear umbrella to defend Germany during the Cold war?

Yes. We had over 20,000 nuclear warheads. Offering to defend Germany, or any of our other treaty allies*, did not prevent us from defending ourselves with them.

We don't have over 20,000 Aegis class destroyers with which to defend ourselves. Your analogy blows.

*We don't have a defense treaty with Israel.

I’m curious how many FReepers would elect to protect Israel over the United States if faced with the choice.

Then there is the third option of "Oh really?"

Canary Trap leak?

I hope this is a trap. This kind of military information should not be public knowledge. Someone should be in Leavenworth over this. That said, I don't believe what was said.

Well the Dems do want to defund ALL of our military. Well, not quite all, they want to keep the part fighting Russia, since that’s their war.

They would also want to keep a portion of the military to disarm American taxpayers.

Your claim is that Grant just went crazy and made up insane charges against Jews because he was an anti-semite?

There is zero chance he figured out who was providing critical financial and infrastructure support to the Confederacy and he wanted to deal with that issue?

Lol.

Ok professor, in Israel’s history, which wars did the United States fight along side Israel?

Oh come on! That's too easy. Who do you think supplied the horns at Jericho? What about David's slingshot? It was a Barrett .87 Cal, high capacity sling with a Raytheon sighting system, proudly made in America. I could go on but you can clearly see, Israel has always depended on the USA.
But seriously, one war leaps to mind when Israel was attacked by all of its neighboring countries. Israel did extremely well in the Six Day War and no, the US was not involved at all. As well as with other conflicts.

I don’t hate to break this you, I was asking the question of someone whose handle starts with ‘Buchananbrigade’. Buchanan was well known for not wanting US interests subordinated to Israel.

It is not our job to protect Israel. They can do an adequate job of it themselves. We can sell them the means to do it.

It is not the responsibility of the US to defend Israel.

But considering we defend at present, to my knowledge, greenland, Japan, the entire EU, the pacific and apparently the Hormuz straight, why should we not go ahead and defend Israel?

Maybe ask the families of the Americans who have died defending Israel if that's what they think their loved one took an oath to do.
