U.S. general warns Pentagon he lacks sufficient forces to protect Israel
The Washington Post ^ | August 1, 2026 7:00 a.m. EDT | Dan Lamothe

Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the head of U.S. European Command, sent written notification to senior Pentagon officials saying that without another Navy destroyer he will be forced to choose defense of the United States “homeland” over that of Israel, said the officials, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the correspondence.

A U.S. defense official said Grynkewich’s notification appears consistent with past outreach to the Pentagon from the military’s top generals when they see certain risks that require Washington’s consideration. This can occur, the official said, as commanders compete for finite resources and weapons.

The Pentagon declined to comment. U.S. European Command did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment.

The general’s warning comes at a tenuous moment in the five-month conflict, as near-daily attacks have resumed following the collapse of peace talks between Washington and Tehran and the operation’s intensity has drained U.S. supplies of key defensive weapons.

The Navy has been particularly taxed, as the Trump administration has directed a blockade of Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The standoff has stymied the movement of Middle Eastern oil and other commodities through the narrow waterway, upending the global economy.

U.S. naval destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea have been employed as a part of Israel’s defense for many years. The vessels, equipped with powerful radar and armed with an array of missiles, have downed missiles aimed at Israel not only by Iran, but by Houthi militants in Yemen that are equipped by Tehran.

European Command is central to this mission, as it coordinates military operations in the Mediterranean. At the same time, its forces must remain ready for any Russian incursion into territory protected by...

Also, how come it’s okay for University faculty and students to hate the Joos and it’s okay for demonicRAT and muzzie political candidates to hate the Joos and it’s okay fur Fake News Media outlets to hate the Joos and it’s okay for click bait podcasters to hate the Joos? But if a Conservative says anything that even remotely sounds anti-Israel, all of a sudden Joo hating is a bad thing?

Why would you believe that? They’ve never done so before. Every military action by Israel has needed US backup.

Ok professor, in Israel’s history, which wars did the United States fight along side Israel?

There’s no way to talk to those people.
Their mind is already made up, and the leadership that would have taken care of the problem before, here on FR, is no longer here, unfortunately.

The way the site used to be, appears to have switched direction with the new leadership, and it isn’t pretty.
Instead of a strong battleship group, it has turned into a chaotic HMS Queen Charlotte (1790) (burning itself out of existence).

I’m curious as to how many Jew-haters we have now on Free Republic.

Its a question of love. Do you love America more than Israel? If faced with the choice of defending America or Israel with America’s hardware, which would you defend? I don’t think you’ll answer.

Too many; they should be zotted before the destroy the site.

This is what I am thinking. Bad money drives out good. We do not need to be associated with anti-semitism.

“I’ve never heard a general or admiral say he has all that he needs.”

Me neither. I spent some of the latter years of my career doing staff work, and it was at best a balancing issue. Sometimes, one would reach the “No longer possible” level, but it usually involved balancing risks with POSSIBLE threats using fewer resources than we would have liked.

Even at the tactical level, we might have wanted 8 aircraft to attack target X, but need 4 for target Y and end up doing 6 & 2 and hope for the best.

“Every military action by Israel has needed US backup.”

I’ve studied the 6 Day War and Yom Kippur War and we gave Israel tepid support for either. SOME logistical support but they fought those wars on the verge of disaster. We have also tied their hands behind their backs, both in those wars and even now in Lebanon and Gaza.

Its a question of love. Do you love America more than Israel? If faced with the choice of defending America or Israel with America’s hardware, which would you defend? I don’t think you’ll answer.

How is it the only country you can think to ask about is Israel?

Let's try this on a few other countries, shall we?

Did we commit our nuclear umbrella to defend Germany during the Cold war?

Does our nuclear umbrella extend to Japan? Will we use our forces to defend Japan from China?

How about the Philippines? Will American military might fight for the Philippines against China?

England?

Taiwan?

What ally will we *NOT* put our own nation at risk to defend?

And you want to focus on Israel? That says more about you than it does about America's willingness to commit itself to the defense of it's allies.

And yes, if it becomes a choice between US or Israel, I choose us, but in this case, it is US *AND* Israel, so there is no conflict for me.

I predict the former, rather than the latter. And it is humorous to see how many here buy into the proposition.
