George and Amal Clooney have been forced to evacuate their home in south-eastern France as a wildfire burned nearby, his agent confirmed to Associated Press on Thursday.
The Clooneys bought their hilltop estate, Domaine du Canadel, in Brignoles in the Var in 2021 and it has since become their primary residence. Last December, the French government awarded the whole family – including the couple’s nine-year-old twins – French citizenship.
In a letter to Didier Bremond, the mayor of Brignoles, the actor wrote that while “at this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment and as we evacuate Brignoles”, he wanted to “emphasise two things”.
“First we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are determined to ensure that, whatever happens to our village, we remain fully part of this community and [will] contribute to its rebuilding. We love Brignoles and the friends we have there.”
The fire near Brignoles broke out on Wednesday afternoon and burned some 130 hectares (321 acres), local officials said. Some 600 residents were evacuated and four firefighters injured.
Speaking to Esquire magazine earlier in the year about his rationale for relocating from the US, Clooney said neither he nor his wife, a highly respected human rights lawyer, did not want their children either observed by paparazzi or being raised with an urban myopia.
“A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it,” he said. “But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grownups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

Fire doesn’t care what’s in your wallet.

The Domaine du Canadel, purchased by George Clooney in 2021, is located a few kilometers from Brignoles, in the heart of the Var countryside. It is an 18th-century country house set on an estate of approximately 170 hectares, surrounded by woods, olive groves, vineyards, and a pond. The property was restored in 1993 by Bruno Lafourcade, a specialist in old Provençal architecture, who modernized the premises without compromising their character. Its French-style gardens are among the most renowned in the Var. The property is not open to the public.
Aww, but you still have your 18th Century villa on Lake Como, Italy to flee to.
I think France needs more illegals passing through, starting more fires.
I was thinking of that old, Amal Angus joke from SNL.
Poor George.. If he could think of FIRE as a euphemism for the murderous, thieving, rapist ILLEGAL INVADERS consuming that part of the world HE’LL BE FINE.
No CLUEney supports Poverty?
Checked it out.
Apparently from when SNL was funny.
Gonna need some Bulldozers, Pronto.
Sounds like your huuuuuge estate was just too much of a carbon footprint.
Mother Earth Spirit Gaia is just balancing the carbon scales.
George and Amal,
Please don’t move back here. We don’t really want you.
Thanks,
boycott
“...his wife, a highly respected human rights lawyer,”
Which has nothing to do with the story at hand.
Attaboy, Guardian, get those liberal brownie points in.
They very quickly cut a deal with the French govt to become French citizens and escape the US. Mmmmmmm.......I wonder why?
If he really love the home he would not abandon it and burn with it!
I live in a WildFire risk zone.
No shortage of things to do.
Clear Space [50 M?]about the abode.
Chop all vegetation about the Hacienda for 100 yards [minimum].
Close up every house opening for the fire season.
If possible, do a VERY proscribed burn around the Compound.
Lay in no shortage of “sprinklers”.
Probably WAY more to get to survivable.
Amal Clooney
Has a twin brother named Juan
Ever seen him?
SPLC? Talk about tone deaf!
...if you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal
Very good. 😏
