SAN DIEGO (KSWB/KUSI) — A dramatic cliff-jumping rescue in the Sunset Cliffs area of San Diego is gaining attention across social media after a 17-year-old was seriously injured while attempting a jump into the ocean. But less than a day later, Nexstar’s KSWB/KUSI found more teenagers making similar dangerous jumps despite seeing the viral video.
The video shows the teen jumping from the cliffs before appearing to strike the rock face on the way down and crashing into the water. Witnesses rushed into the ocean to help keep him afloat after he was unable to move on his own.
San Diego lifeguards and firefighters responded, using a technical rope rescue system to reach the injured teen and bring him to safety. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“Cliff jumping is not only extremely dangerous, but it’s also against the law in San Diego,” Candace Hadley with San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
Lifeguards warn that hidden rocks, changing tides and ocean conditions make every jump unpredictable, even for experienced swimmers.
Adding to the risk Monday, larger swells along the San Diego coastline created stronger wave action around the cliffs, making conditions even more hazardous for anyone entering the water.

There have been all kinds of warnings about staying out of the ocean in So Cal, b/c of hurricanes off of the coast kicking up huge waves - however:

I used to live right there, a walk farther north towards the pier but right on the cliffs, it is perfection.

There was never a time in history when the boys would not be jumping off the local high thing into the water, most have to settle for the railroad bridges, you also see it off apartment complex roofs into pools.
Bridges, cliffs, waterfalls…gave it up around age 40.

A lot of shortages in this country lately but Darwin Award nominees is not one of them.
Kids have been foolishly jumping from cliffs, bridges, quarry walls and other high places for many, many years - since way before Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge. Its stupid and dangerous but I doubt it will end in any of our lifetimes.
Friends and I jumped off the cliffs near La Jolla Cove back in the day.
Luckily he was not bitten by the Sea Lion, their bite would be nasty.
Strong jaws, sharp teeth, seal bite wounds are slow to heal .
The sea lions shouldn’t be there, that was a great little urban beach right in the midst of downtown La Jolla, the park the restaurants, the caves, the scuba diving, the shopping, all right there and all integrated in a beautiful, small, and charming scene until the left turned it over to them.

Most popular jump in La Jolla in the ‘60’s was at “The Clam”. Saw many jump but I never attempted it.
I will be more careful next time, sir.
