A pack of coyotes have moved into an abandoned West Hollywood condo complex, forcing locals to live in fear while demanding the city steps in.

The complex at Romaine Street and North Spaulding Avenue. which has been under construction and empty for years, was first taken over by homeless squatters that have now been replaced by the wild animals.

“It’s kind of interesting to walk out of your apartment and look up and there’s a coyote looking at you,” Cindy Sorley told CBS LA.

Shocking videos and pictures appear to show six coyotes roaming the empty building, with each one taking up a different room. There’s also videos capturing daily and nightly howling/barking of the pack.

That happens in our north treeline and windbreak just about every night!

They won’t hurt you, but you shouldn’t try to pet them.

People used to be the apex predator, but these are reduced to sheep.

“The City of West Hollywood is aware of community concerns regarding coyote activity,” a city spokesperson told The California Post, and referenced the city’s “coyote management and coexistence plan” adopted in 2018.

there is a plan so what is the problem?

Coyotes are curious, smart and adaptable creatures and our urban areas provide the perfect balance of food, shelter and water for them. What you may not know is that even in fragmented and urbanized landscapes, coyotes can play an integral role in their environment by providing ecosystem services and helping to maintain species diversity. Coyotes in urban areas not only provide free rodent control by feeding on mice and rats, but also help to regulate the population size of other species that may cause conflicts with people in urban areas.

I remember that during the last real estate bust in Florida, gators and all kinds of other critters took over abandon developments.

Apex? They are primarily scavengers. They can take small game like rats, rabbits, house cats and dogs. They ae no threat unless they have rabies, unlike wolves who are apex.

I would rather have the coyotes. Maybe other cities can investigate this solution.

Although I have never seen a coyote in my North Orange County, Calif. neighborhood, we know that they’re around. Two years ago, my cat disappeared, and I believe he was the victim of a coyote. He was an outdoor cat when I adopted him and didn’t want to live indoors. Several cats in our neighborhood have been killed by predators, most likely coyotes.

They can take small game like rats, rabbits, house cats and dogs.

Deer fawns too, sometimes even an adult. They go for the Achilles tendons on the rear legs.

Coyotes or Coywolves can climb across 6 foot fences. It’s dangerous because people think that pets and small children are safe in the back yard if it has a fence, but not so. Many municipalities have local ordinances limiting residential fencing to 6 feet max. It’s a problem.

I lived with them in close proximity for 2/3 my life and never had an issue with any human attacks or threats except during calving season which was used to thin them out ;)

They will kill your smaller pets and children if undefended.

Around here, the city’s philosophy is that coyotes and bobcats live here so you have to watch out for your small pets.

Most likely the developer either ran out of money - or is tied up in court due to lawsuits.

There are two two-story ADUs sitting 1/2 finished in my neighborhood - each one for over two years. One has the wood siding up - and nothing after that - the other is covered by insulation and chicken wire. A good El Nino storm will probably destroy them.
