Hundreds of incoming Howard University students from across the country were blindsided just weeks before the start of school after learning they had been unenrolled over unpaid bills.
Freshmen were informed this week that they had missed a July 10 payment deadline and would not be allowed to attend the upcoming fall semester at the private HBCU school in Washington, DC. ABC 7 reported.
Students were set to start moving into their on-campus housing on August 3 while the Fall semester begins on August 17.
Isabella Williams had her truck packed and was gearing up to take the long trip from her home in Alabama on Thursday to start her internship with the school’s football team next week when her dream school informed her she was unenrolled.
“Never in my life have I been so disappointed,” Williams said in a tearful video on her Instagram. “Never in my life have I gotten so far and worked so hard for it to be stripped from me on a random Wednesday.”
Williams, who was accepted to 42 colleges, committed to Howard University in May.
Williams said she had two guaranteed scholarships pending from Howard University, who was going to cover the remainder of her tuition balance due in July.
“I had two scholarships from Howard University. I had an $11,000 scholarship and a $16,000 scholarship that was directly from them,” Williams told the outlet.
She said she was as transparent with the school as she could be, sending them document proof that money would come in August and was told “everything was fine” and that her “scholarships could come through later.”

Decades ago, I worked in a college business office. We worked with student’s tuition and fees billings.
Pending scholarships were noted, and transferred to another office, for collection of the pending scholarship funds.
In a case such as this, we would have credited the student’s tuition account with the pending scholarship, as if it had been already paid.
So perhaps there is more to the story. If Howard Univ. itself had granted her a scholarship from their own funds, and had already approved same, it seems odd that they would cancel her out over unpaid tuition from scholarship funds directly controlled by the university.
As I said in my comment 61, this would not be the first time Howard did something dumb. Years ago, some black people I knew were working as street vendors around Howard campus. They were often given a hard time by the U. I thought this was strange, as a black oriented U ought to be encouraging entrepreneurship. After much thought I concluded vendors were not upper class enough to be allowed to contaminate their campus.
Also, vendors have goods, that in past days were easy to steal or just take. Thus it made sense to teach free Negroes mental jobs like teaching, medicine, and the like. No one could just steal those skills. Unfortunately, even by that time (the 1990s) Howard still appeared to have no concept that there had been enough change that they should also encourage business and entrepreneurs. I wonder if after 30 more years their viewpoint has modernized?

The vast majority of the comments are good / innocuous / funny depending on the topic. Racist comments are not any of those and violate a core tenant of FR rules.
It’s kind of weird to have the payment deadline be before scholarship payouts. Especially their own scholarships. The right hand and left should be talking to each other.
Purges for non-payment are occurring nationwide for higher education institutions that start in late August and early September.
That’s not a bad thing as long as the institution
has not messed up. There may be students on a wait list for a class who can now add that class. Maybe not as many sections need to run for a course so not as many adjuncts need to be hired, etc.
Purge for non-payment is not uniquely racial. It’s financial.

I’ll never rat them out to mods or consider anything anyone says as a violation because it’s not my site and I don’t have to be here. If it might bother me because it’s disagreeable, “racist”, anti-a particular Christian religion, hateful, stupid, ignorant or even threatening, it’s almost always ignored and I move on. And I’m even getting better at ignoring them when buzzed. But I am *never* going be some self-appointed FR Cop or Karen. Posts that are apt to be called out as racist posts are those that mock black Americans as a group for crimes of a person or persons, equate them as primates lower than humans, or use ecological fallacy to make a point.
