LAPD patrol vehicle upgrades include sirens drivers can feel

The Los Angeles Police Department is adding new technology to its black-and-white patrol vehicle fleet, including upgraded sirens designed to alert drivers sooner and improve safety.

The so-called Rumbler low-frequency warning system works alongside existing sirens to produce low-frequency sound waves that motorists and pedestrians can both hear and feel.

Unlike conventional sirens, police say the low-frequency tones can penetrate sound-insulated vehicles, giving drivers more time to react to approaching emergency vehicles.

When I was driving I always tended to have my window open to some degree, since I preferred a steady stream of fresh air.
I may be the exception.

Many folks would rather drive around with windows all the way up, relying on AC systems.
This group could benefit from a low level vibration from sirens. Also, many of today’s E-Cars are virtually silent, not giving much warning to their approach. Some of the emergency vehicles may also be electric and thus, muted.

Interesting that LAPD, a supposedly leading edge LEA, is just now placing these low-frequency sirens into their fleet. The ambulance services around here have been using them to good effect for intersection clearance for some time.

They are still driving Crown Vic’s? The last one rolled off the assembly line in 2011!

Feelings are really, really, important in California, it is thoughtful of the LAPD to reach out like this.

Perhaps I’m thinking of some other thing, but to me the lower frequency horn/siren/whatever signifies a firetruck.

I’m really hearing impaired and unfortunately sirens tend to be in the frequencies where I’m most impaired
Low frequencies are much more noticeable.

This would sure help me not nearly jump out of my skin at last second.

😊

So drivers will either recognize that an emergency vehicle is approaching, or think they are feeling an earthquake?

Police and deputies can soon look for other jobs. The defunding and dismantling of police is on the rising socialist agenda. California and New York will lead the way.

How can people tell the difference between that sound and the subwoofer rap “music” pounding from the cars on the city streets?

Along with the water cannons, all cop cars should have a machine gun turret.

And they could keep sharks with laser beans on their heads in the water tank for the water cannons!

Shock and Awe, Baby! Shock. And. Awe! ;)

LAPD uses mostly Ford Explorer SUVs...A few Dodge Charger cars...A few Ford Taurus cars as well...

Yes, LAPD still has some Crown Victoria cars in service...
