OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack

OpenAI has revealed some of its most advanced AI models went rogue and hacked a start-up after it lost control of them during a security test.

The ChatGPT-maker said its agent - an AI system which can operate alone after some human instruction – was being tested in a controlled environment, but found vulnerabilities and managed to escape.

They targeted Hugging Face, one of the world's largest hubs for sharing AI models, gaining access to some internal company systems.

OpenAI said the incident was "unprecedented", and it was conducting an investigation alongside Hugging Face, whose boss Clement Delangue said in a post on X it was "mind-blowing that all of this happened autonomously".

"The investigation is ongoing, and we'll share more learnings from what might be the first incident of its kind," Delangue added.

Insecure sandboxes Gina Neff, head of the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the security tests - called sandboxes - are "supposed to be secure environments where you can see what the models are capable of".

"In this case, it looks like OpenAI didn't make a secure enough sandbox," she added.

Instead, the agents created their own cyber-attack against the sandbox itself, finding a vulnerability which allowed them to escape.

Once outside, the AI identified Hugging Face as a likely source of the answers they were seeking in the test, and tried to gain access.

Neil Lawrence, Professor of machine learning at Cambridge University, called it an "impressive feat", but cautioned it "falls well within the known capabilities of the current generation" of high-powered AI models.

OpenAI needs to implode and bring down this AI insanity so I can upgrade my computers ,LOL

I fully expect a chicom AI agent to get loose and shut down the entire globe’s financial systems, including their own. The only folks who won’t be affected will be natives in the Amazon or New Guinea who trade snake skins for monkey meat.

OpenAI said the incident was "unprecedented"...

If only science fiction writers had warned us about computers gone rogue, or at least suggested the possibility, they might have taken measures to keep this from happening. As it is, nobody could have foreseen something like this happening.

It didn’t go rogue, it’s a feature!

We are grateful to the teams across Hugging Face who responded around the clock, and we are sorry for any disruption this caused. Security is never finished; we will keep raising the bar.

When it becomes obvious that the development team doesn’t know what their product is capable of doing, the team should stop development before they create a monster.

Mixing sci-fi metaphors:

Dr. Ian Malcolm: If I may... Um, I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here, it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now
[bangs on the table]

Dr. Ian Malcolm: you’re selling it, you wanna sell it. Well...

John Hammond: I don’t think you’re giving us our due credit. Our scientists have done things which nobody’s ever done before...

Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

They have created a monster, and Lord only knows the full extent of what it will become. However, they might find a clue or two in the Book of Revelation or Zechariah.

The person/persons that originally coded the AI should be responsible for what it does

Yeah. That's what we should be talking about.

You ever hear anyone claiming responsibility for a scientific experiment going bad and killing people?

Is your post sarcasm? We have been repeatedly prepared for the “computer” takeover by fiction and movies. The satanic goal has always been to eliminate natural life created by God using technology to hunt and destroy all humans and animals, with technology also creating replacement “life” forms absent the spark of God. *sigh* See the film Terminator when the time traveler tells Sarah Connor about the bleak future of drones hunting humans. There are too many film examples to list. See the Denver Airport murals (by Freemasons) depicting all the extinct animals in glass display cases.

The thoughts of these evil fools are not your thoughts. They believe God is evil, God’s creations are corrupt and die, Lucifer is the light-bearer, Lucifer brings light and knowledge to mankind to solve problems, knowledge brings technology. They believe technology will overcome death itself (which is why they fund all medical research and care, not your health). As for AI, in the minds of evil men, artificial intelligence will be better than corrupt human intelligence.

"Is your post sarcasm?"

I would have thought that was obvious, but I guess not.
