Those people are going to vote D no matter what, that’s 20%-30% of the voters.. I’m not talking about them, they are unmovable.. just like 20-30% will vote R no matter how bad the GOP candidate is.
Its the 40-60% in the middle that I am talking about... and those are the folks who the reminder of how corrupt the D’s were putting an invalid into office and lied to their faces about it for years will impact.
This is true of nearly every election. 20-30% (each side) are going to vote for their party no matter what, or will stay home rather than vote for the other side.
Those aren’t the people you need to sway.. Other than to get them to show up. Its the other 40-60% you need to move.
Democrats are in a bad way right now, however, that doesn’t mean people won’t vote for them out of anger, or that GOP voters won’t show up out of anger.
If gas prices are still high, and no meaningful progress happens between now and september on Iran... Dems will likely see decent gains.
They are almost certain to take the house no matter what, just based on the fact its a midterm, they are out of power, and they only need to net gain less than a handful of seats.
At the moment, a blue “wave” is not indicated, but if gas prices in particular, are still high come Sept/Oct... That will no longer likely be the case... not that voters are sold on Democrats, but they will voice their anger at the GOP by voting against them, or not voting for them.
IF on the other hand, gas prices are down significantly, I think this will be far more muted.
The Economy is the key, always has been, always will be. Gas prices affect the working class hardest, and much of Trump’s/GOP support in last several cycles have come from here.. If they lose them, the Dems will have a good night, not because folks are buying what they are selling, but they are angry and voting against those in power.
I’d say GOP has maybe 6-8 weeks tops to get gas prices down, and that means getting something substantial accomplished in Iran, at least in terms of their ability to sew chaos.

The votes that will decide these midterms are going to turn on gas prices, and ensuring that there are no more flag-draped coffins coming home from a conflict that we have supposedly “won” about 25 times already.
We have probably already taken more casualties and suffered more damage to our Middle East bases than the official story being told.
Pain at the pump and grocery store, along with the feeling of being back in another “forever Middle East war” draining blood and treasure when we were promised America First, will mean more than talk of hypothetical WMD’s that Iran has been “2 weeks away” from having for 40 years.
The neocon and Israel First arguments aren’t going to fly if this keeps going into the fall.
I’m not ready to have congressional Bolsheviks in power, more dead American troops, and a wrecked economy as the price to pay for trying to continue to reopen a strait that was not previously closed prior to March and attempts to eliminate WMD’s that don’t exist.
Iran is not some isolated small patch of flat open desert governed by goat humpers whose main arsenal of weapons are IED’s and idiots wearing suicide vests.
To take out a large, mountainous regional power that has resources and tech capability will need us to either mobilize for real war with all the monetary and blood sacrifices involved, or use tactical nukes and risk the ultimate Black Swan event.

Timing is everything. Maximum impact is when it is first released... if it gets released now, it will be old news by October/November.
Like I said, as much as I don’t like saying it, if gas is still this high in September, the Dems will have a good night in November, in spite of themselves.
Of course, if the Iranian regime falls, or is completely neutered, and gas prices are back in the $2 range, and can demonstrably show that the world is safer because of it, then democrats will lose the biggest thing helping them at the moment.
Because if they win in November it won’t be because folks like their policies, or want what they are selling, it will simply be because folks are disappointed with how the GOP/Trump have handled things.
This it the reality of most elections in the US today.
Reality is, Trump and by association the GOP own Iran and its impact, and gas prices, are a direct result of these actions. Yes, there is no doubt that an neutered Iran makes a safer and better world. This is a regime that should have never happened, its the gift Jimmy Carter gave the world and keeps on giving, and it will never stop as long as the current regime is in power.
They either need completely gone or completely neutered, because they will sow chaos at any opportunity. It’s what they do.
The US is NOT going to put major boots on the ground, which means a full overthrow is not likely unless the people of Iran rise up.. but currently, at least officially neither the US or others are willing to arm, and back up any resistance/civil war. Make no mistake, should that happen it is unlikely it would be bloodless... If it goes there it will be barbaric, this regime is not going to go away peacefully and it has a lot of true believers who will die happily to defend it.
A coalition of Gulf States willing to say enough is enough, and stand up to the bully of the middle east might be possible, but arab militaries are notoriously bad.. so even with a coalition were to be built, and decided to do something about Iran, its hard to see it being successful, at least in any sort of short time frame.
We’ll see how this all plays out, I don’t know the answers, but I do know, if gas is still $4+ dollars a gallon come October, dems will almost certainly have a good night, in spite of being totally unpopular, particularly on policy.
I think you’re right, HJ. I must be in the 20-30% GOP or nothing group, because I voted for George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney—but consider the alternatives!
Iran actually having nuclear weapons, functional and deliverable, would be worse than what could be imagined about all out war against them.

Look no one is going to win an argument with someone who is struggling by saying “it could be worse”.
Reality is simple, like it or not, if gas prices are still this high by Sept/oct the GOP is going to get spanked, that’s just how it is.
GOP already has a problem getting turnout when Trump isn’t on the ballot, that they have yet to show they have solved.. $4 a gallon gas, will make the problems that much more pronounced.
I agree completely that long term taking out the Iranian regime is a huge net positive for the world, but we aren’t even making the case publicly for that because politically it’s unsellable to the majority.
Gas prices are high, they are high because Trump bombed Iran. I agree with his reasons for doing so, others may not, but there is no escaping gas prices are up because of this.. and if if you aren’t in the UMC or UC, you are feeling it and many will indeed stay home or vote against the GOP is this is still going on near the election. Especially is there is tangible change..
I’m not clutching any pearls, the democrats can’t win on policy.. and the fact they are finally admitting openly they are socialist ans communists (at least some of them now) is why the polling remains tight.. because the left keeps reminding everyone how nuts they are. That however only goes so far. They are nuts but their base is loyal and will turn out no matter what.
The price of gas needs to be coming down, and/or some very significant movement has to happen with Iran, to show this is worth it. Because average joe isn’t going to eat it without venting their frustration and in our country that generally is at the ballot box.
