Desktop Linux has seen a massive surge in popularity in the past few years alone, which, ironically enough, is in no small part thanks to Microsoft. The recent string of Windows hiccups has forced folks to migrate to Linux, and the number seems to be ever-increasing.

Microsoft has no one to blame but itself for this mess. Windows had all the advantages and the correct formula for success, and being bundled in almost all personal computers certainly helped.
Linux, in comparison, had always been a niche “alternative” operating system for hobbyists. Not anymore, though.
However, their recent track record of incorporating puzzling new features (that, more often than not, are half-baked) that no one asked for is making it hard for the average user to interact with it.

You want an operating system that gets out of your way while you use your apps. Windows has a bad habit of tripping the user with nagware, and it’s only gotten worse over time.

Microsoft’s Indian CEO fired most Americans and hired Indians and it shows
Windows 95 crashing all the time with its Blue Screen of Death is why I started looking for alternatives. I eventually bought a Dell computer pre loaded with Ubuntu . I actually don’t want the rest of the World moving to Linux. I rather the scumbags of World keep thier efforts at creating viruses focused on Windows.
It’s really not much different than folks “cutting the cord” with cable when you get right down to it.
It used to be you’d just buy the CD and actually own the system. Now “the system” wants to own you.

Most CEOs today, do not care about the survival of their companies. They only care about maximizing share price. By firing all the AMericans and hiring Indians, he ensured short-term profit and bonuses whenhe cashes out his shares and leaves.

XP was the good one.
Too good in fact. It was so stable, folks didn't need to buy new stuff so in came the forced obsolescence.
At the same time Microsoft lost its anti-trust case in the 90s and a likely part of the settlement w/the government was to allow back doors into their systems.

So I'm left in a quandry. I now have the ability to either use Linux as my primary O/S, and put Microslop into a virtualbox, or visa versa. Which way do I go?
Right now, though, I'm not going to act rashly. Windows 10 will be supported until late 2027, probably 2028, so there's time, and that's my primary O/S. But I have Linux on another system and after about three days of trial and error I finally got Linux 21.3 running smoothly. I need to get newer video cards but other than that I'm good.
Decisions, decisions............

I reluctantly moved to Xp 64 and took until support for 7 was almost up before going to that.
Same now with Win 10
Probably stay there until i can go to Linux with everthing working as well as W19 does.
Older CAD stuff seems to be the biggest hurdle and I did not care to resort to VM’s
I particularly object to MS wanting to tie the OS to my phone or email. That’s none of their business.
After Microsoft ended DEI about a year ago (due to Trump), Windows 11 has been improving.
Brother and Spectrum tech support people have told me switching to Linux means I will not be able to correct any errors in the system as Linux will lock you out when errors appear and you try to make any adjustments.
IOW it’s not user-friendly the way Windows with all its faults is. I’m not a nerd so I don’t know the truth of these claims. I know that with Windows and a little guidance from AI I can fix most problems I encounter.
When I installed Windows 11 on my "unsupported" Dell M4800 last year I bypassed it with Rufus settings.
Yesterday I was suddenly confronted with a complete update that insisted on an email. It let me create a new one and I chose user µsoftsucks@outlook.com. It wanted another email address to connect it to and I chose fuckmicrosoft@gmail.com and it accepted it. Evidently somebody else had the same idea as I and had already created it.

Correct.
After a long tech support call to Amazon on why I can’t listen to or watch anything on Prime the tech support guy I was working with found that unix systems are deliberately blocked. The “update your browser” error was basically a lie. He went to some trouble to find that little factoid. Thanked him and wrote a nice follow-up on him without mentioning what he had found.
Windows has a back door somewhere that amazon - and others - use to verify users. The BSD systems don’t have that leak. They blocked Linux systems also at the time; don’t know if that has been fixed at Amazon.
The world will not move away from Windows. Real work is run on windows. As much as I hate it the windows OS at $200 is nothing compared to the $20k I have to to spend every year on my CAM CAD FEA software that only runs on windows.
