Lately I’ve been noticing that young people don’t “get” my Monty Python references.
They look at me with blank expressions.
They’re the same blank expressions I get when I quote Moby Dick, or Shakespeare, or The Bible.
It makes me sad.
The real “looks” I got were when I spontaneously launched into “The Spanish Inquisition” Sketch.
Oh My Goodness!đ˛

That's because No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition. :-)
And they say....Who's Loretta Young??
â Lately Iâve been noticing that young people donât âgetâ my Monty Python references.
They look at me with blank expressions.â
Most young people here know they have to have seen certain movies or they shall not pass
The Holy Grail is one of them
One of their favorite scenes is the guards and the Prince. â Dâjya mean the Prince? But if, if, if, ehhâŚâ
The question isnât do they get the humor. They certainly do. The question is what are their parents so busy doing that they donât sit with them for two hours once a month and watch these flicks?
This one, Jaws, the Thin Man series, Hope and Crosby Road ToâŚ, White Chicks, Die Hard, Dr Strangelove, The Heat w Melissa McCarthy, any Errol Flynn, all Rogerâs and Hammerstein, Frank Sinatra w Gene Kelly and Jules Munchen, the Marx Brothers, Dark Knight, muppets Christmas Carol
Parents want the schools to educate kids and they have no Americana in the house.
Itâs not the kidsâ fault
And they do get these movies and references
I had my 10 th gradersâ parents asking me why their kids were quoting â
Duke Orsinio from âTwelfth Nightâ on the car ride home and in the supermarket produce section
They get Shakespeare
They need exposure. Thatâs not their fault
Just today I had one of them telling me, very amused, how amusing it is to see Keanu in Bill and Ted, after bringing Beethoven to the mall, Beethoven goes to the mallâs piano
They get the humor. They need exposure
A friend and I quote Monty Python when we are at work. I had him laughing this morning when I said “I have a very great fwiend in Wome called Biggus Dickus.” And I made sure to use the Pontius Pilate voice.
I mean I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition or anything ...
The most uncomfortable reaction to a Monty Python reference I have ever seen was at Christmas mass on year when the priest was commenting on the church having two manger scenes. “If this one is Jesus, is that one over there Brian?”. A couple belly laughs and a lot of quickly stifled uncomfortable laughs.
