Trump Backs Down on 20% Fee For Strait of Hormuz, Day After Announcing It

President Donald Trump took back his 20% fee on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, some twenty-four hours after first making the surprise announcement.

In yet another yo-yo move of his tariff and trade policy, Trump claimed that he will replace the transit fee on the Strait with “trade and investment deals” for individual countries using the key energy hub.

“Oil is flowing like never before, thanks to the awesome Power of the United States Military. A special salute to Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine, and Commander of the United States Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper,” Trump wrote of the Strait of Hormuz, adding:

Because of them, and all members of the Most Powerful Military anywhere in the World, BY FAR, the Strait of Hormuz is open to ALL Ship traffic except for Iran — and that is because of their lying, violent, malicious leadership, which is taking them down the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION. We will therefore have a FULL Blockade, but only on Ships coming to and from Iranian ports, or carrying anything have to do with Iranian cargo.

Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States. Those Investments will be MASSIVE but, at the same time, extraordinarily good for them, and their future.

As everyone is aware, we have the largest Dollar Investment into the United States, of any Country in History, but these new Investments will make that Number even larger, and we will see Factories, Plants, and Equipment pour into the United States at Historic levels, which will create additional millions of High Paying AMERICAN Jobs! America is WINNING again, winning like never before. The days of Iran killing hundreds of thousands of people, including 52,000 protestors, are OVER and, most importantly, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Trump told Fox News on Monday that “We’re taking over the strait” amid ongoing military operations against Iran. Trump’s fragile ceasefire with Iran collapsed last week after Iran continued to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, sending oil prices hiking back up.

Trump announced on Monday afternoon that “The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran.” In an eyebrow raising social media post, Trump added, “The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World. The process and formation will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump and allies should set up a program where the Strait must remain open and the cost of ANY AND ALL damages* inflicted upon shipping by Iran will be 100% covered by IRANIAN IMPOUNDED FUNDS. This would stiffen the spines of the shipping insurers and reinsurers. And IRANIANS UNDERSTAND MONEY, do not want to lose it and will punish (i.e., kill) those who cause the loss. And the ones causing the loss are the IRGC.

I’m posting this in every thread where the absence of such MONETARY DAMAGES ASSESSMENT is partially responsible for the situation.

And, yes, we could both bomb Iran (and/or take other actions) and do this at the same time.

* “ALL damages” INCLUDES the cost of cargo, the cost to repair/replace the ship, the “opportunity cost” (revenues/profits the ship could have made during the time the ship is out of action), losses suffered by the crew members (and.or their families) who are injured or killed

If anyone can figure out what we are doing on a daily or even hourly basis in Iran, please let Trump know, because he sure doesn’t seem to. His positions change constantly. And no, this isn’t some 4D higher level thinking he’s supposedly doing.

As before, the Trump team is already doing this

The 20% fee was never intended to generate revenues, it was to motivate shipping to traverse the strait to keep shipping open

Shippers were making demands of the Trump Administration on the pretext of keeping shipping moving

Trump flipped the script on these people and suddenly the strait is perfectly ok to traverse without the need for US intervention

Of course, negotiate down from your initial high offer! I do not think he would have actually implemented this.

“Assume he got China’s attention rather quickly.”

How so???? The tariff was replaced by an economic burden that “various Gulf States” will have to absorb.

“I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States.’

That makes it a non-issue for China.

What are you trying to say?

Shippers were going to be MORE motivated if they had to pay 20% of the value of their cargoes to the US?

“Of course, negotiate down from your initial high offer!”

A negotiation would suggest that a counter0ffer was made by Iran. There was none.

We are reduced to seeing the White House “negotiate” against itself.

Indeed, Trump appears to be negotiating against himself... and losing.

Yup. Way overrated. Including all the “trust the 6D chess” comments rife here over 10 years.

Trump is just making things up as we go along. Iran can keep the Strait closed and there’s nothing we can do about it. You think the insurance companies insuring those ships are going to give the ok signal while Iran may still attack the vessels? The restarting of the war at this late date is likely to cause a worldwide economic depression which the US will be blamed for. Pretty soon the US will join Israel as the most hated nation in the world. Trump just continues making these horrible decisions. Personally I think it’s time to remove him and let Vance take over. Trump is just getting too old to handle this in an appropriate manner.
