I clicked on my bookmark for Free Republic.
The splash page came up.
And then in dawned on me:
Free Republic is 30 years old this year!

This is actually my second account. I signed up and posted back during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, then didn't log back in again for a couple of years and forgot what my account was.

If this forum is the private property of Jim Robinson, his heirs and assigns, as I’ve sometimes been told, it should either be self financed by said heirs and assigns, or through solicited donations. I don’t invite people into my house for dinner, and then charge them money for the food. Kills the mood for what’s supposed to be a pleasant gathering.
For my part, I’d say charge advertisers to post their banner links to either infomercials or web pages, and use that as a source of revenue. Nobody needs to click on the damned things, but if they do, it supports the forum.

Happy Anniversary!
Found it by searching Lycos for “Monica Lewinsky.” JimRob was a true pioneer, and attracted a lot of very righteous and knowledgeable people from all walks of life. It’s more closed minded bots now in total lockstep with their flip flopping party leader, but those willing to tough it out in the name of actual conservatism are often very worth the read.
