May and June heatwaves killed about 2,700 people in England and Wales, data suggests
The Guardian ^ | July 13, 2026 | Damian Carrington

The heatwave that affected England and Wales in June killed about 440 people a day during its three-day peak, scientists have estimated. Across the whole of the June heatwave, plus the one in May, about 2,700 people lost their lives prematurely.

The data starkly illustrates the danger of extreme heat, which is being supercharged by the climate crisis. More than 40% of the people affected would not have died without the 1.4C of human-caused global heating to date, according to the analysis. For comparison, about four people die each day as a result of road traffic collisions and about 35 a day because of alcohol and drug use, according to government statistics.

Extreme temperatures will worsen as continued fossil fuel burning pumps pollution into the atmosphere, making cuts in emissions and measures to protect people from global heating urgent, say experts.

“These are big numbers and we don’t want to see this many people dying,” said Dr Clair Barnes, at Imperial College London, who led the analysis. “We’ve reached the point where the heat is so extreme that we can’t help but acknowledge the impacts it has.”

The June heatwave peak resulted in an unprecedented three successive days of red warnings from the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office, warning of danger to life for all, though the young, old and those with underlying illnesses are most at risk from high temperatures and humidity.

Just think of how many would die if the EU focused on air conditioning for everyday households. A concept that would only add to climate change.

/EU socialist thinking.

Speculation that feeds into some social and economic philosophy.

which is being supercharged by the climate crisis

The high got to 95 degrees in London one day. That is their evidence. Big F'ing deal. The average temperature in the UK was in the 80s. This article is pure propaganda.

The price of 2700 deaths was worth it, if lack of air conditioning saved even ONE polar bear.

It’s cyclical. Texas weather has had maybe one day that hit 100F. Today its 80F now. We are usually baking about now. 100F+ all the way to October. Over 2” of rain today with a lot more on the way. Sometimes the hot weather is in North America, sometimes it is in Europe. No amount of taxes will change that. Good news is in the USA we can go buy an air conditioner to make it comfortable, The European idiots? No AC for you. Hows that authoritarian government working out for you guys?

And yet they still can't prove it. But let's go ahead and keep the lie going.

All those deaths every year are more than those killed by guns in the US.
Yet, those smug wussies let the old and young die.

Everybody in England is about 70 miles from the ocean... Go to the ocean... Jump in the ocean... Cool down. The alternative... Air Conditioning. You can buy one for a hundred or so pounds at your local store. Don’t be stupid... cool down.

There are videos of the beaches in Britain, no whites there.

If Brits want to go to the beach, they fly to Spain.

Data, if it is actual cause of death data— WOULD NOT “suggest’ it would be stated as a clinical health data fact.

Which this ‘data’ is not factual whatsoever. Cause of death data for this time period would take some time to be collected and categorized for one. And unlikely, #2.

The temps don’t support the “data”.

Look at the temps for the time mentioned— Wales and Ireland, which are at Wales Lat approximately 52.469° N. Ireland n and s Lat between 51° and 56° N latitude

Wales shares latitude with cities like Berlin, Germany, and Dublin, Ireland, and across the Atlantic with cities like Seattle, Washington, and parts of southern Canada not known for heatwaves.

liberals would rather people die by the thousands every year, than allow them the AC needed to save their lives.

I chose this apartment because the sun never hits my windows. beautiful trees and bushes instead. Plus a soomewhat shady side yard where my cat and I go out every day to water plants, maybe have playtime. she doesn’t like it too hot either.
Nevertheless, it’s going to be very hot this afternoon, 88 is when I turn on air conditioning. Or maybe 90.

very interesting, I’m at the same latitude as my welsh ancestors, but the temp here today is approaching 90 in this inland city. I wonder how my daughter’s welsh corgis are doing today in the heat.

Our son just returned last night from England. He and three buddies went on a golf, tennis, F1, whiskey tasting, and sightseeing adventure for two weeks. Thank God they made it home alive!

,,, loose numbers. Predictably, a commentator from the Imperial College - Bill Gates funded, chimes in with certainty on climate change.

they were probably mostly all over 90 years old-

[[More than 40% of the people affected would not have died without the 1.4C of human-caused global heating to date]]

Ohhhh- so now NOT all 2700 died from the heat and ONLY 40% supposedly did? These geniuses know how long people will live? We’re just supposed to take their word that they died of a mere 1.4c rise in temps? BS! They probably died of Covid vaccine overdoses!
