Under provisions of HB 4948, which Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law on Friday, the state will introduce the “Intelligent Speed Assistance Program,” designed to replace license suspension with a different alternative for drivers.
According to the text of the law, the program will require drivers who have committed two qualifying speeding or reckless driving offenses within a 12-month period to install a speed-limiting device on their vehicles, which will prevent them from exceeding the speed limit. Persons enrolled in the program will pay all costs associated with enrollment and participation, with exceptions for low-income
Virginia and Washington have already passed similar laws

Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law on Friday
Don’t make waves while Gov. JB Pritzker is counting the money.
I don’t want a speed-limiting device on my car, but I would like a beep that lets me know I’m exceeding the speed limit.
Politician’s telling people they know what’s best for them... Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo.
Socialist... They just won’t stop until they run everything.
I suspect those in power just get a “slow it down, have a nice day”
no written warning, no paperwork at all.
meanwhile the average joe going 5 over trying to get to his 3rd job on time will have the jail built on top of him for his first offense.
Driving a car is no different than “driving” a horse 200 years ago. It’s not a privilege...it’s a necessity for most.
losing speed on hills is common for heavily loaded semi tractors.
they have only so much power.
losing chunks of the load is a DOT violation, even if it’s mud/rocks on the tires. Those should have been cleaned off before he pulled away from where ever it came from.
if you and the truck were exceeding the speed limit the revenue was in stopping the truck, higher fines more possabilities of addional tickets (like the debris coming off the tires and the DOT can always find something to ticket a truck for)
My money would be on the truck being stopped, not you.
not as bad as trucks with farm plates....
back in the day cars had that, I’ve had GPS units that had speed warnings built in to them as well.
A safer alternative would be for the judge to order a GPS tracker on repeat offenders to actively monitor any time they go well over the speed limit. Send a ticket or summons.
Limiters in all vehicles next...
Then trackers and more toll roads to track the trackers.
“Limiters in all vehicles next.”
Most cars already have limiter.
Mine is 178.
Well, I don’t think that law will stop the continual loss of residents Illinois has been experiencing, but I guess it might slow down their departure.
What is the maximum speed limit on the device?
The the law says exceeding the speed limit by 26mph and getting caught twice in 12 months will get you the speed limiter.
And this thing knows the speed limit on each road, and for each town?
And you come into town at 65, and the limit changes to 35, does this limiter slam on the brakes?
And then no other car rear-ends you, right?
It is done with GPS. My 2025 car alerts me when I exceed the speed limit.
[[losing chunks of the load is a DOT violation, even if it’s mud/rocks on the tires.]]
We keep several lengths behind trucks in winter- always chunks falling off- ice, mud, rocks, bark, snow (LOTS of trucks hauling wood)
LOL- Good one!
meant to say - my kind of humor!
Like “governors” on trucks years ago - maybe still? My BIL drove trucks for a living and they were equipped with those....
