Under provisions of HB 4948, which Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law on Friday, the state will introduce the “Intelligent Speed Assistance Program,” designed to replace license suspension with a different alternative for drivers.
According to the text of the law, the program will require drivers who have committed two qualifying speeding or reckless driving offenses within a 12-month period to install a speed-limiting device on their vehicles, which will prevent them from exceeding the speed limit. Persons enrolled in the program will pay all costs associated with enrollment and participation, with exceptions for low-income
Virginia and Washington have already passed similar laws

Get a bicycle or walk.
Get rid of old cars to save the children and snail darters.
Even if you beat the tickets, you still need the speed controller.
In "1984", the rats were in cages; in Illinois, the rats run the state.
This is dangerous as hell. Limiting the response of the vehicle when driving will cause accidents. Can’t wait for the lawsuits
You’re driving along and you come upon a vehicle going 10 mph below the posted limit. If you’re not in a no passing zone you might want to step on the gas to get around them before oncoming traffic gets too close.
What if you need to get to the hospital quickly or make a life saving maneuver?
“within a 12-month period to install a speed-limiting device on their vehicles”
I’m ok with that on the condition all obese people in Illinois are put in a cage for 12 months starting with Pritzker.
...and now it begins. People will think GREAT IDEA!
Reminds me of the anti-bullying movement. Sounds great - little kids not harassed in public schools...then parents realize the real objective was to get their foot in the door to turn those kids into queers.
What not just take them , they’ll use another one anyway ,LOL
Absolutely correct. I have a feeling there will be carve outs for the manufacturers of the devices. Can’t sue the government for bad policy execution

Our granddaughter inhaled a plastic cap that became stuck in her throat. The daughter and son-in-law could not remove it.
From the car, they called the local police.
The police met them and guided them through cross traffic to the hospital, not much above the posted speeds.
The emergency room staff quickly removed the obstruction.
The opportunity here is for some enterprising IT geek to develop software/hardware to bypass this oppressive bs.
People are always willing to pay for the opportunity to give the middle finger to the government......especially a proper Ahole like pritzker.
—”I’m ok with that on the condition all obese people in Illinois are put in a cage for 12 months starting with Pritzker.”
The cage should be outside, so his accomplices could help feed him.
Driving is a privilege.
Am more in favor of heavy fines for repeat offenders and mandatory jail for speeding that results in injury or death of others.
About 10-11 years ago a motorcyclist would speed down a rural divided highway road where we do some of our ornithology research. As in well over the speed limit. He blew past a State Police speed detail and clocked at 118. I talked to the State Policeman and he said it was useless to try and chase someone going that fast. He did say the speeder would be dead by the end of summer. “We see it every couple of years” the State Policeman said
And it turned out he was. He t-boned going 70-80 a pickup that was making a legal turn near a curve in a nearby township. A friend in the fire department said his body was not intact when they cleaned up the accident scene. The pickup driver had minor injuries.
So every Illinois state legislator and executive branch official goes the speed limit all the time? And if they speed, they will have these limiters installed in their vehicles? I suspect the limiters will only go in the vehicles of the serfs.
This is Illinois. Follow the money. Find out the company making the equipment (exclusively, of course) and find the Dem’s pocket.
Did anyone seriously think that they give a crap about safety?

Closely related to the system used for drunk drivers, it’s been around for years.
A guy I worked with drove the “BLOWMOBILE”, a breathalyzer test, before starting, and every 30 minutes.
A sad story, a super successful guy who loved to drink.
I used to see the “Blowmobile” at a local country club, his favorite watering hole.
Hopefully, he was just sipping a Coke.
Limiters in all vehicles next.
Speaking of drivers who could use speed limiters (because their vehicles are like porcupines anyway, nobody’s gonna mess with them)...
A couple of months ago, I was driving along minding my own business when I came upon a very large and wide flatbed trailer, loaded with some kind of humongous tractor with ginormous tires.
Perhaps the equipment had broken down while operating at a construction site, because the tires were thickly caked with mud and other stuff such as gravel.
As such, dried up gunk was breaking off of the tractor’s tires. Ping ping ping.
Cars were naturally going around this beast, but there was a catch...
The driver was really hauling arse when he could, when the road was level or headed downhill. But then come to a modest incline (which happened repeatedly), his speed would suddenly plummet.
If he’d kept on speeding, normal drivers would not have had any need to pass this yahoo in order to escape hazardous flying debris.
But that’s not what was happening for the reason I explained. Lucky me, it was my turn to pass as he was going wayyy over the speed limit, forcing me to go well beyond that.
If a revenue collector had been at the ready (this was place they hang out), I would have had a bad day.
—” I suspect the limiters will only go in the vehicles of the serfs.”
Here in Illinois, some classes of serfs are more equal than others.
“Illinois generally does not collect traffic fines directly from welfare recipients. Under Illinois law, public assistance benefits (such as TANF, SNAP, and general assistance) are classified as exempt income. This means creditors and government agencies cannot legally garnish or withhold these funds to pay off unpaid traffic tickets”

I’m sure they don’t. But we’re talking people that go over 100 mile an hour. We’re not talking the 5 mile over the speed limit people here.

Flatbed drivers are lawless rogues
