Tetanus may sound like a disease from another era, but experts are warning that it remains a serious threat.
Two recent reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found hundreds of tetanus cases and dozens of deaths over 15 years, along with four cases in children in 2024 alone. At the same time, vaccination rates have declined, worrying experts that more people could become vulnerable to this potentially deadly but preventable infection.
To help us understand what tetanus is, why it remains dangerous and how people can protect themselves, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen. Wen is an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University. She previously served as Baltimore’s health commissioner.

You can get the tetanus shot after the fact. Four is a low enough number to account for people who are completely stupid/lazy/indifferent, and some whom for whatever reason (health or religion) cannot get the shot.
Four cases (NOT deaths) in children in one year is nothing compared to the number of children who die from five gallon buckets, for instance.
We do not need a universal law to get the number four down to two.
“Experts.”
🤔
I always took them up on the suggestion for a tetanus shot.
>> “Experts.”
Leanna Wen is a progressive POS in love with all things mRNA.
I get cut, stuck, scraped, scratched and whatever almost every day. usually with dirty stuff. I get a tetanus shot every ten years. I am due again. Thanks for the reminder.
Stepped on a rusty roofing nail and went to The Shot Nurse that day. Insurance covered 100% of the cost.

Same here, since early childhood, I always considered it a good shot, I may not keep up with the 10 year thing perfectly , but when I’m around medical and they would ask, I would think back to try and remember the last one and respond with a yes, let’s do one.
“Tetanus is a rare but dangerous disease”. So he ‘ I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen’.
What a joke.
just be wary: the standard tetanus shot is now actually a combination (or “medley”) vaccine, as it almost always includes protection against other severe bacterial infections.
Also there is a push to make it an mRNA shot. Because it wasn’t broke, so we need to fix it.
Why do we need a Tetanus shot when we have antibiotics? Besides, they’re converting all the Jabs to mRNA now to decrease the elderly population
The tetanus shot sounds all well and good until you learn more about the mechanism of action. I talked several of my family members out of it.
I don’t believe a Chinese woman doctor and neither should you.
The disinformation campaign related to tetanus has been going on for more than a century. Rust doesn't cause tetanus.
C. tetani is a bacteria commonly found in soil and manure.
From the CDC: “During 2009–2023, a total of 402 tetanus cases and 37 associated deaths were reported from 47 states and the District of Columbia,”
So that’s 2-3 deaths per year?
Every rusty piece of metal is not drenched with tetanus. If it’s covered with mud from a cow lot with a bunch of cows exhibiting signs and symptoms of tetanus, you might have a concern.
When are health experts not worried? Oh. that’s right. When it affects their ability to collect on the bill.
Never had one and I’m 74 .
I had a stroke after the covid vaccine (I was active Army...it’s a long story that ends in medical retirement). I haven’t had a single injection since that one in 2021.
However, I cut my finger to the bone repairing my lawnmower, and I live on a farm with animals where tetanus thrives.
I went and got the tetanus vaccine immediately as I know I was at higher risk of tetanus at my house due to all of the animals. I’ll get the old-school vaccines with long, proven track records. Anyways, I was traumatized from the covid vaccine, but other than the sore arm, no ill effects from the tetanus vaccine.
“I get a tetanus shot every ten years. I am due again.”
Last time I got one, the doc told me the new rule of thumb has been revised to every five years. But I’ll be hitting the 10-year mark in a couple years, so ... I’d better get on the stick. Or get the stick.
402 cases over 15 years isn’t even a statistical anomaly in a nation of 330,000,000 people.
I looked up the Tetanus numbers pre-vax once. It wasn’t all that different.
