Fights have broken out across France as hundreds of shoppers scramble for air conditioning units before soaring temperatures next week.
Footage showed Parisians scuffling over the coveted equipment in a Lidl supermarket after 400 people queued all night to get their hands on a unit on Thursday.
The clashes came after temperatures reached 44C (111ºF) in parts of France last week, with sweltering heat set to return on Monday.
One customer reportedly injured eight people, including a 12-year-old, with pepper spray in an attempt to get his hands on an air-conditioning (AC) unit.
Seems like Europe's experiment with no air conditioning is working out great! Thankfully, though it isn't expected to be fall-ish anytime soon, it does look like the weather in Paris won't be as mind-meltingly hot over the coming week

You’d think the sand people would be used to the heat
Early refrigerators ran on sulfur dioxide.
Gemini:
“Yes, some of the earliest home refrigerators used sulfur dioxide gas as a refrigerant.
Introduced in the late 1910s and 1920s, these systems were effective but dangerous, as any leaks could release toxic and corrosive gas. They were largely replaced by Freon in the 1930s.”
Elderly French citizens have been reportedly dying of summer heat for several decades.
Because they’re relatively cheap, I cut through a bedroom wall in my mobile home. Running all day, that WINDOW unit keeps the humidity tolerable all summer.
Like when new Air Jordans are on sale in the hood.
My sister and her husband moved to Portland, OR after living in Maryland and Nebraska. When they interviewed a realtor, they told them to show only houses with central air. The realtor thought they were nuts but when it got warm, their house was a favorite place for friends to hang out.
We rented an AirBnB when my nephew got married out there and changed it when we found out they didn’t have A/C.
R-12 reportedly caused the diminution of Earth’s protective ozone layer.
Hundreds of dead Parisians now are being kept refrigerated in Paris Morgues, who might not be in that situation if they had air conditioning in the first place.
Irony can be so Ironic.
I thought France was largely powered by nuclear plants and didn’t have any power problems. I have relatives there, in southern France, I’m sure they have air conditioning, but I’ll have to check with them. They have been here many times, love our country and want to relocate, but it’s difficult.

That really is an interesting take, I hope that idea reaches the French public in commentary and consciousness.
Anywhere in France as hot as Ozark Arkansas 90 years ago?

It works fine for my barn-man cave. Swamp cooler in the barn, window unit in the man cave. 68F, it really chills the room! Texas heat is here. No 100F yet, later than normal.

“200,000 air conditioners and fans in 1,600 stores throughout France…..$1300 USD each”.
That’s about 125 per store.
It must have been like Black Friday waiting for the stores to open.
Dated a girl that was from buffalo New York back in the 80s.
At one point her parents built a brand new house up there without central air.
Having lived in the deep South all my life I thought that was crazy and questioned it.
I was told it never gets hot enough in that area to justify A/C.
Sure enough, first year in the home western new York experienced a severe heat wave.
Maybe us Southerners ain’t so dumb after all.
Last thing I heard was the death toll from the heat wave in France topped 1,200.
Some people would die to get air conditioning.
Yes but they travel in single file to hide their numbers.
