Went with my brother and a friend today to see "Young Washington" which was released today.
I have been looking forward to this movie for some time, and wondered if any other Freepers saw it, and if you liked it.
Me? I thought it was great. I am reasonably well read on Washington, and I think he is one of the greatest men who have ever lived.
To me, 95% of Americans who know anything about George Washington only know about his activities in the years directly before and after 1775, and this movie ended about ten years before that. I thought it was brilliant to show this part of his life, when he was a young man with ambition.
Any thoughts from my fellow conservatives?

Folks, I loved the movie. Loved it. This movie covers a part of Washington's life many people are less familiar with it. He is a tall young man who wants to be more than a tenant farmer, which is an old story at the core of many biographies of men other than Washington.
But he had such a desire to make his way in the world on his own two feet, and if he wasn't formed by the same molds that formed those in higher society, he was determined, even from a young age to remake himself and build himself in order to become a significant person.
Much of what he experienced at that young age of his life was crucial to shaping the person he became that we all know. In particular, his resentment that he could not get a commission in the British Army, and even worse, he was viewed as contemptible by the very people he was asking to let him in, and who he later served with in the French and Indian War.
It toughened him to withstand defeat so that it could not destroy him or his mission, and it made him a tenacious warfighter in the middle of that same defeat. He learned to never surrender.
It created such a hot fire in him to succeed that he did.
My daughter and another friend at church went to see this today and said it was EXCELLENT.. the theater was PACKED and there was thunderous applause at the end!
Any focus on the father of America is a good thing. Edith and I enjoyed the movie but as a history teacher I think it would do a viewer good to brush up on the French and Indian war . We all stand on the shoulders of this amazing human being,
Hahaha, we had about ten people in my blue state theater, didn’t get any applause, but I was just happy nobody egged the screen at the end!

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been wondering about it. There has been a lot of push advertising for it which is usually a sign of desperation/bomb. I’ll check it out this week with the family.

Was a good movie, battle scenes editing was superb. My only gripe was that the woman who played his love interest is a terrible actress!

Outstanding movie! Very thought-provoking, excellent production.
As note above, a treatment of a part of this country’s history, and Washington’s life, that few are aware of.
I look forward to sequels picking up from here.
It ended in 1755 I believe, with him as a Colonel in the Colonial militia at the age of 23.
Be sure to stay in your seats through the end credits, there’s a brief video appended there that is worth seeing.
I saw it this afternoon...
I was not impressed.
I was expecting something along the lines of his conversion to American revolutionary ideals... That didn’t happen at all. There was nothing really “American” about this movie at all.
It pretty much peaked with British praise for his bravery in the 2nd battle, after he failed and quit after his first battle.
Battle scenes were not really captivating or realistic... They just showed him being unbelievably lucky (Divine protection) not getting shot at point blank range.
Directing could have been a LOT better.
Nobody seemed to know why they were fighting, or who they were fighting for. It seemed somewhat pointless... In the end they cheered for “Virginia!”... not “Liberty”.
I assume you do know they were British subjects at the time. There was no sentiment of independency at that time. They were LOYAL British subjects. In 1755, he wasn’t in the least bit close to any kind of “conversion to “American revolutionary ideals”.
That “conversion” would happen many years later after he had become mired in the mercantilistic relation with England, where many Colonial farmers were in hock to British merchants who sold them goods at an unfair exchange rate. If anything, it was probably the Stamp Act that began to drive him inexorably towards a separation, and that was a somewhat exponential rise with a long, gradual slope, then suddenly spiking upwards as they moved past the Boston Massacre in 1773.
They weren’t fighting for “liberty” at that time. That would have been historically inaccurate to the point of absurdity. And, they would have absolutely cheered for “Virgina”. 100% they would have cheered for Virginia.
That is an accurate portrayal of his actions at that time. Horse shot out, bullet holes in his coat and his hat, that is all true.
But the movie wasn’t made to show George Washington as he was in 1775. It was made to show him in 1755, and the various things that turned him into the George Washington history largely knows him as.
Er, the Boston Massacre in 1770, not 1773. But you get the point.
Hahaha, I watched this in a blue state theater, and when I saw that little notice to hang on for a message, I snickered to my buddy “Wouldn’t be awesome if Trump was delivering that message!
I can only imaging the exploding heads that remained in the theater!
