New mortality data from the federal government suggests that life expectancy probably hit another record high in 2025, as death rates have continued to fall since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were about 689 deaths for every 100,000 people in the US in 2025, according to a new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — the lowest rate recorded in more than a century of tracking. The age-adjusted rate has fallen 22% since 2021, landing about 4% lower than it was just before the pandemic in 2019. ... Life expectancy is essentially a population-level snapshot of death rates in a given year. This calculation isn’t included in the new report — the mortality data is provisional and subject to change as the full set of death records are processed — but a record-low death rate would most likely suggest a record-high life expectancy, demographic experts say. The top causes of death in the US in 2025 followed longstanding patterns: Heart disease led with nearly 695,000 deaths, followed by cancer with nearly 623,000 deaths. Unintentional injuries, which includes drug overdoses, were the third leading cause of death. Overdose deaths are still high — about 70,000 people died from an overdose in 2025, preliminary CDC data shows — but experts say that sharp declines probably played a large role in bringing the age-adjusted death rate down in the US.
“Life expectancy is going to be affected a lot by what’s happening at younger age groups more than at older age groups,” said Mark Mather, .... “As we see a dramatic decline in drug overdose among younger adults, that will have a more measurable impact on life expectancy at older ages and the overall life expectancy of the population.”

Due in no part to Fauci.
I have been seeing more and more people in my extended family live into their 90s which is good.
Ok. /s
But I do not define what my parents are currently experiencing as ‘living’...
I have seen that already too. Watching it again with my son’s mother-in-law and again with an associates in-laws.
I have a fear of outliving my my usefulness or ability. It is a conundrum you probaby can’t out think so you just do the best you can every day.
Cripes. Now Social Security is REALLY going to go broke.
I wonder if they have adjusted for Covid and the Covid vaccine clearing out the weak ones in recent years.
I think one way of dealing with that is to go out as naturally as possible.
For those who believe living should not include becoming a burden on others while existing with no hope of rejuvenation, go about life as normal relying on painkillers and nothing else.
There will come a day when I will go mushroom picking for the first time...
If you thought smokers cost a lot in medical expenses, just wait to you get a load of the healthy.

The biggest required adjustment is accounting for the fact that everyone who took the vaccine is supposed be dead by now.
Which may be why the remainder are living longer.
So is everyone who got Covid!
Obviously alot of the vulnerable died then. Same with the fentanyl epidemic IMO, it had to crest sometime as the vulnerable wiped themselves out but closingbordrt was also important. As the younger you die , the more you contribute to the decrement of average life expectany , having fewer young people die will contribute to the decline.
my mom will be 90 in a few days. Her mom lived to 99, and an uncle 104. My dad was 90, his mom 103, her two brothers were 90 and 97.
mom is 90 on the 16th, she lives by herself on the farm.
In 2024, Mom died on the family farm at 99. Totally sharp until about a week before she died.
Dad will be 90 next month. Mom will be 91.
Could this be because the COVID jab and the COVID treatments took out the low hanging fruit?
When originally set up, Social Security let you retire at 62 years of age. The average LIFE SPAN was 57 years.
