An 11-year-old from Canada has died after contracting rabies following contact with a bat.
According to a June Canadian Medical Association Journal report, the unnamed boy died several weeks after the bat landed on his face while vacationing with family in Northern Ontario in the summer of 2024.
The bat was reportedly on his nose and face when he woke up, and he swatted it away before his father caught it and later released it.
Due to a lack of evident scratches and bite marks, the boy was left untreated for approximately 19 days before he began to develop facial numbness and began to vomit consistently.
An urgent care reportedly treated him for Bell’s palsy before his condition worsened. The family took him to an emergency department, where he received treatment for rabies after doctors learned of his interaction with the bat.

Bats are quite small. It would be very possible for there to be scratches that could not easily be seen. It would have been better to be cautious and seek medical care if there was any chance that there could have been contact with the bat’s saliva.

Rabies is absolutely terrifying.
I got the rabies shots last year. its just 3 shots in the arin the arm. they were no problem. there’s another treatment if you get mauled and have a lot of blood contact.

Many yeas ago my brother took in a stray cat and took him to the vet then found out he had rabies , it was a very nice cat
back in 1980, I had to give a long series of anti rabies shots to a girl attacked by a bat.
I suspect it scratched him or the virus entered his mucus membrane (e.g. saliva or something similar into the eye), because he died so quickly it suggests the entrance was in the face (the time to develop rabies depends on where you were bit and how badly you were bit. On the leg takes months but a bite on the face can kill you within weeks.
But nowadays, in the Philippines, they give three anti rabies shots: Four if you are high risk and get the gamma globulin shot with it. This gamma globulin protects you if the virus is there before the shots give you natural antibodies, something that takes 10 to 14 days.
Here in the Philippines, rabies is a real problem because of feral dogs who run away or who are puppies of wild dogs... the vaccine costs about ten dollars a shot, and for awhile the mayor gave it out free, but now people from our area come in asking for help to pay for the shot (we don’t live in a gated community but a regular area with poor people living nearby).
We lost a local young girl who pet a puppy that bit her but she didn’t tell her mom, and later she died of rabies.
and by the way, this is why Muslims hate dogs: not their hunting dogs, which are traditional, but wild dogs who eat garbage etc. and often carry rabies.

I spoke to a doctor about bats and its rare that a bite or scratch is even visible. My daughter had one in her bedroom one night that I trapped with a towel. Doctor said since I released it, he would have recommended my daughter go through the rabies shots.
Animal scratches can be dangerous as well from feral cats. Guy I went to high school with had had his spleen removed from a motorcycle accident. He was at a friends house who had a puppy. Puppy bit his hands while rough housing and he died a couple weeks later.
A bat can transmit rabies to you via a scratch that you can’t even detect. I make sure that my rabies vaccine is current, along with all the rest of them. Even though I had previously been given rabies vaccines which should have conferred lifetime immunity, when I updated my travel series three months ago the doctor informed me that new studies show that the protection may not in fact be lifelong. I had a rabies titer done and in fact I was down to 35%, so I had a rabies booster.
If you travel in the developing world or are around animals often, it’s not a bad idea to have the rabies vaccine.
In the late 50’s my Mom and all 5 of us kids were literally at the Taj Mahal in India when a man from the US State Department came RUNNING up to her!! He said that our family dog had contracted rabies and we ALL had to immediately return to Dacca, East Pakistan ( where my Dad worked for USAID ). We had to undergo treatment as soon as possible!
We were young and clueless but we kids QUICKLY found out that the DAILY, “Hey, everybody .. . let’s go for a car ride” meant a ride to the HOSPITAL where we were STABBED in the GUT with bayonettes!!! After the second day it took FOUR nurses to hold my kid brother down! It was the FIRST time I had EVER seen my older brother cry.
THIS went on for two weeks. I HATED car rides after that .. .
He got rabies right off the bat.
When I was a wee lad and we lived in a farmhouse I saw a chipmunk and tried to catch it.
It didn't like that, and bit my hand.
Fortunately my parents caught it (still under the car in the grass where I was reaching for it) and I didn't have to go through any rabies treatment.

I wonder if any of the bat’s family that it was vacationing with also had rabies?

I’ve always heard skunks are the most prevalent carriers.
There is a disturbing video on youtube documenting the progress of a man dying of rabies. It’s an awful video. Search Rabies in a human patient (1955). I’m not posting the link because you need to seek it out and be sure that you want to see it. Horrible.
