The news brought great sadness at the YMCA the YMCA.
Condolences to family and friends of Victor Willis.
When I first heard “YMCA” on the radio, I thought it was an ad for the Young Men’s Christian Association. It is now a MAGA anthem.
The YMCA on Witherell in downtown Detroit was a great place to go on a Saturday morning to play basketball with my friends.

Victor loved the song being used by Trump.
RIP Victor.
Willis always claimed to be straight, and was married ( to women, strange that you need to point that out these days). His first wife was Phylicia Rashad, who is best known from the Cosby Show.
He was the straight one.
Wiki: From 1978 to 1982, Willis was married to Phylicia Ayers-Allen (now Phylicia Rashad), whom he met during the run of The Wiz. She later portrayed Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show.[24] Willis wrote the lyrics and arranged the vocals for her disco concept album, Josephine Superstar, which featured the Village People on backing vocals. On November 17, 2007, Willis married Karen Huff, now Huff-Willis, a lawyer and entertainment executive.
I watched interviews of him about YMCA being played for Trump and adored them. He was fun and he was gracious. Really sorry he’s gone so soon.
Village People had just 2 top 20 hits !
Visited a YMCA in Columbus, GA with my Cub Scout troop in the ‘60s.
We planned to go swimming so I brought my swim suit, of course.
We walk through the door to the pool, it is full of men and boys—splashing around, diving in, cavorting—all as nekkid as blue jays!
Shocked, excused myself and went to the weight room. Did not catch the gay.
YMCA was one of those “I HAVE to sing along songs.” Also an ear wig.
He’s not a ‘young man’ anymore.
I have a participatory YMCA routine that I sometimes use when working parties.
We had to swim naked in Jr High.
I am sure there were some gay kids in the pool in 1972. We did not think of that. I tell my kids about that and they are shocked. When I see youngsters being aghast at that, I show them pictures of the bathrooms at basic training.
