David Clayton-Thomas, the Grammy Award-winning lead singer for “Blood, Sweat & Tears” whose hits like “Spinning Wheel,” “And When I Die” and “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” died on Wednesday, his publicist said. He was 84.

Eric Alper confirmed that the singer died at a Toronto hospital but did not provide a cause, The New York Times reported.

The group’s three biggest hits all reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts in 1969.

“You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” peaked on April 12, 1969, followed by “Spinning Wheel” (July 5) and “And When I Die” (Nov. 29). Each song spent 13 weeks in the Hot 100.

I was never a fan of bands ( other than jazz hehe ) with horns but must admit they had a few tunes I could listen to . About 15 years ago drummer Bobby Colomby bought a rare snare Tama bell bronze snare drum from me .

He became noticed in Toronto with a solo single titled “Brainwashed” and ascended from there. Personally I never tire of hearing him sing “God Bless the Child”. Sadly, in later years it was reported that a manager embezzled most of his money earned with BS&T.

David, along with the Horn Section, was the heart and soul of BS&T. I remember during their fame thinking if a movie was ever made about Blood Sweat & Tears, David’s role should be played by actor Rod Steiger. Rod had an aura, a way about him that seemed combustible and one step away from becoming volatile. A Poor Man’s Richard Burton, if you will.

“And when I die, and dead and gone, there’ll be one child born, in this world, to carry on, to carry on!”

So mote it be!
