a bonanza of new genres or styles of film

Can also be said about popular music. Sure, if you really go digging you CAN find music being made today that might fit into any one of many different genres. But the music promoted by the Music Industry? It's basically Pop. Or Country which sounds just like Pop. Or maybe R&B -- which sounds like Pop. In previous decades, the top music could be from any one of dozens of genres. People liked a lot of very different stuff, and all of that stuff sold well. Today, you don't get much say in the matter -- it's all bland.

Go to www.bandcamp.com.

No digging required. Their search engine and genre pick list gets it done quickly.

“Can also be said about popular music.”

Beat me to it!

There are many contributing factors. My theory is that film, music, etc. are all just mediums of dialogue and thought. Great scripts are not being produced, on the whole, because our culture has lost the ability to engage in deep dialogue and thought. This is a symptom of the moral and educational decay which began heavily in the mid century.

It’s everything.
Music
Fashion
Movies
Architecture
Art
Cars

All bland by design.
