Although the family of Karmelo Anthony brought in more than $600,000 in a fundraising pitch after the now-convicted killer was charged with murder, Anthony now says he is broke.
Anthony filed to have taxpayers foot the bill for the appeal of his murder conviction and 35-year sentence, according to Fox News.
Days after he was sentenced for stabbing Austin Metcalf in April 2025, when the killer and victim were each 17, Anthony filed the forms demanding someone else pay for his appeal.
In the filing he said he was “penniless, destitute, and indigent person, too poor to employ counsel to represent me on the appeal.”
A GiveSendGo campaign raised $633,908. It was removed after Anthony’s conviction.
Organizers said the fundraiser was designed to help the family cope after the black teen was charged with murder.
“We are grateful for your support during this incredibly difficult time for Karmelo Anthony and his family,” organizers wrote.
“This fundraiser has been established to provide comprehensive assistance to the Anthony family as they navigate the many challenges surrounding Karmelo’s case,” it said.
Anthony has already been assigned court-appointed attorney Donny Perales of McKinney, Texas, according to Texas Metro News.
Mike Howard and Toby Shook represented Anthony at the trial.
The convicted murderer’s attorneys were not given any praise when Anthony’s parents spoke to the media recently.
Media personality Mimi Brown — a fixture on the black-oriented radio program “The Breakfast Club” — spoke to Anthony’s parents, Kayla Hayes and Andrew Anthony, during a recent interview.
At one point, she asked the two, “So, do you believe your son received a fair trial?”
Both replied “absolutely not,” and Hayes promised to “keep fighting.” Brown also asked if the two would have done anything differently.
Andrew Anthony replied, “I wish I would have just been rebellious. I was told, ‘Don’t talk to this person.’ ‘Don’t talk to this person.’ I feel like it was just a set-up. So, they told us, go get white attorneys. Every black person I went to, ‘white attorney.’”
This article appeared originally on The Western Journal.
His parents were the ones who raised that money then spent it on a new home and a car. Some of it on a lawyer but not the best one. The GiveSendGo was cut off once Karmelo was found guilty but the Karmelo Army is still trying to raise money for the family because the parents are grifters. Karmelo won't see any of that money while his parents live high on the hog.
It isn’t cheap to be ghetto fabulous.
I believe this sucker was offered 10 years for a guilty plea. But that meant his family would have to return the money they had grifted. So they convinced him to take his chances at the trial. Well, 33 years for him, his family keeps the money, and now he has no cash to spend on an appeal. This is all broken on so many levels.
Did they pay the taxes on it first ? LOL
Everyone should be entitled to a court-appointed attorney.
Broken but, truly, not unexpected.
Every black person I went to, ‘white attorney.’”
“This fundraiser has been established to provide comprehensive assistance to the Anthony family as they navigate the many challenges surrounding Karmelo’s case,” it said. Are they kidding me? A black boy murdered a white boy in cold blood.
There has been no report suggesting that Karmelo Anthony filed a sexual harassment complaint claiming that he was subjected to inappropriate physical contact in prison.
Andrew Anthony said he was told to go get white attorneys.
“Every black person I went to said, ‘get a white attorney.’”
Actually that’s quite commendable; admitting
black attorneys couldn’t defend karmelo properly.
Now that he’s been found guilty, dad wants to walk it back.
The evidence is irrefutable-—the fatal encounter during a rain delay began when the two teen strangerss got into a verbal altercation when Anthony sat in Metcalf’s team tent.
The dispute escalated, Metcalf pushed Anthony, and Anthony responded by fatally stabbing him in the chest with a folding knife.
During the trial, prosecutors argued Anthony initiated the violence. Anthony’s defense team contended that he acted in self-defense, but the jury rejected that argument and found him guilty of murder.

Where Karmelo is going, money won’t be needed. Except maybe to buy 35 years worth of soap on a rope.
I read the GiveSendGo policy is to allow another fundraiser if the convicted appeals the sentence......which he has, so apparently the grift will continue.
Great ain’t it?
Court appointed does not mean taxpayer funded.
If you have the means, you have to pay.
The donor pays taxes if the donation exceeds yearly gift limits.
Very.
Exactly.
“Whoever donated is SICK!”
Black people who were trying to “get whitey”. A lot of them had relatives in prison that they would send money to. Money those relatives did not get because it was sent to the Anthony family. Money that was basically flushed down the toilet.
You “parents” don’t give a damn about you kid.
Just suck it up and go away quietly.
