Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” Flops with $6.5 Mil Preview Night, Looks at Lowest Opening for Famed Director in Years Thanks to Sports, Weather

“Disclosure Day” may be the most alien film in Steven Spielberg’s catalog.

The really terrific story of UFO info finally being divulged to the world went over as a dud last night at the box office.

The film made just $6.5 million in previews.

Tonight, if the film makes $10 million, and then does the same Saturday and Sunday, it will be a historic flop.

Timing is everything in the movie release world, and this is not a great weekend for a hit. The weather is stormy. (An ironic problem since Emily Blunt plays a metereologist.) The World Cup has begun in soccer. And tomorrow night, the NBA finals with the Knicks and Spurs will draw maybe 25 million viewers.

“Disclosure Day” also has problems at Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews are at 82% from critics, and a low 74% om the audience meter. I’m surprised, because I really liked it. But audiences are demanding more from movies now than ever before. “Disclosure Day,” unlike other Spielberg classics, may not feel urgent.

It's a "really terrific story" few people want to see because of sports and weather.

Spielberg’s comments about Christians forsaking their religion probably didn’t help either. I love SciFi of all kinds, but since those remarks, I am absolutely not going to see this one.

He should have stuck with vacationing with the likes of Tom Hanks and Moochie Obama.

The Critical Drinker said it’s so bad that Spielberg should hang it up as a director, he’s done.

Hollywood need to learn how to make 90 minute movies again (and not spend 100 million for film thats mostly talking heads)

Go see Masters of the Universe instead. An entertaining summer popcorn movie that’s a lot of dumb fun, plus a great message (about men stepping up to fight for their families).

I loved that the protagonist in the movie was a 1970 (or so) Plymouth Valiant.

$6.5 million in weekend ticket sales is a bummer.

Spielberg spent $115 million to make it.
Universal spent $80 million on marketing.

Spielberg’s big mouth didn’t help.

His comments about the pic making Christians “lose their faith” was idiotic.

The Critical Drinker said it’s so bad that Spielberg should hang it up as a director, he’s done.

Spielberg has lost his edge.

The future in filmmaker belongs to young YouTube auteurs like Curry Barker who can crank out hit films that only cost $750k to make because they're adept with new technology.

Barker's "Obsession" is the runaway hit of the season and will be the model going forward in film making.

He was purposely provocative in order to get people worked up to see it. Why? I think he realized what a piece of crap this film is. What did will save it but dig it a bigger hole!

What my wife and I will do is go see it. If we like it, it’s a good movie. If we don’t like it, well, ok, we wasted our money. I don’t trust critics.

And there’s John Williams’ score… I can’t wait to hear it.

The trailer was pretty bad.

The good news is that “the emperor has no clothes” moments still exist in 2026. Start sweating, Nolan.
