Families in a New Jersey school district were left outraged after a cafeteria menu distributed for June displayed a watermelon graphic on Juneteenth — prompting school officials to condemn the image as racially offensive and demand immediate action from the district’s food-service contractor.

Montclair Public Schools said the image appeared on a June cafeteria menu prepared by food-service provider Sodexo and sparked complaints from students, families, staff and community members.

Superintendent Ruth Turner said those who saw the menu were “hurt, disappointed, and offended” by the graphic’s appearance alongside the June 19 holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

I think, for Juneteenth, our Cartoon Network should show old Merry Melodies cartoons all day. /sarc

The Perpetual victumhood lobby rewriting history again. Stephan Foster was a great song writer! The equivalent of a rock star today because that is how music was spread in his time. Just because some black guy is shown enjoying it they took it down? Much of his music is still popular today!

The father of American music", Stephen is still known for his folk music . Foster wrote more than 200 songs, including "Oh! Susanna", "Hard Times Come Again No More", "Camptown Races", "Old Folks at Home" ("Swanee River"), "My Old Kentucky Home", "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair", "Old Black Joe", and "Beautiful Dreamer".Moving his statue for the perpetually aggrieved was an outrage! We should insist it be put back!

The Rosenberg’s didn’t actually give out nuclear secrets. They were spies but the Soviets had a real spy who was actually getting those nuclear secrets so the Soviets set up the Rosenberg’s to take the fall and the heat off of their best spy.

NYS is the same. School n ever started until after Labor Day.

Course, they could get out earlier in the early summer if they’d quit taking a day off about every two weeks for some *holiday* or *teacher training*. Then there’s a week for winter break and then a week for spring break.

Also, once into May, teaching pretty much ceases. Often there are parties and picnics and useless activities because the kids just kind of shut down when the nice weather happens.

I NEVER had off for Good Friday. In the schools, it was understood that there were days certain people took off for certain religions and…well…that was it. No teacher complained, nobody filed a complaint. It just “was.”

Certain national holidays like Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Memorial Day, MLK day, Colombus Day, Veterans Day, Presidents Day….we all got it. It’s part of being an American.

The Jewish kids didn’t complain about Christmas being a day off, but we Christian kids envied Hanukah (even if they really didn’t get 8 gifts). It was fun and we all learned a little something without it being a Big Deal.

As a Christian I didn’t feel a need to have the day off for non-Christian holidays.

Public schools - which should be abolished but since we’re here - should operate like we did decades ago…you get the standard national holidays, kids can take off whenever for whatever as long as your parents wrote a note, and call it quits by the second week in June.

Interestingly, homeschoolers are hard at work many of the days the public schools are off. Honestly, Montclair’s calendar is eye-opening. It’s also absurd. But we’re a problem.

I’m thinking “National Range Day” at our local outdoor firing range. You do you and I do me...
