Here are three well received low budget films. Two suspense horror films that have been released.

Pressure is tops on my list.
I like to watch movies with my family, including my grandchildren. Almost every movie made in the past 25 years or so is off limits. My daughter screens them for foul language, sexual content, etc. They know that if something like that comes onto the screen watching it is terminated immediately. Therefore we tend to watch old movies.
I've have experienced everything in my long adventurous life, including skinflicks, and am certainly no naif or prude, but I will not watch pornography--which is exactly what many of these 21st century movies are--with my granddaughter sitting next to me--or my daughter either.
Therefore we tend to watch old movies.

Same usually
I forgot to include my perennial favorite PRIMER.
Best of the low budgets

Thanks. Obsession and Backrooms are getting a lot of press as two out-of-the-blue indie sensations. I about posting on them, but you beat me to it. Pressure is in a different lane, but it is being well reviewed.
Pressure looks like a worthy historical film. The reviews I’ve seen have been good. And since I am always banging the drum for seeing movies in theaters — so the streamers don’t become the sole gatekeepers and drag everything into their downward spiral — I’ll probably troop out to see it.
Obsession is not my kind of movie; most of us are old enough to remember the original slasher films built around psychotic characters, jump scares, and lots of blood splatter, but there are always young people coming along who are the natural audience for mindless horror movies. There no question that it’s a durable, relatively low cost genre.
The low cost is the main thing that interests me about Obsession. It was shot for $750,000-$1,000,000 and has already grossed $162 million at the global box office. A lot of projections suggest it will surpass $200 million.
That is a kinda, sorta incredible ROI — and this was shot by a 26 year old YouTuber with a very thin filmography, basically a newbie. One of the questions that has been on the horizon for some time, as the big studios remain locked in their losers’ game, is where will the next generation of creative disruptors come from. YouTube is now the most viewed platform. It is now in the discussion as a talent incubator and training ground.
Some of the YouTube launches are worthy of freeper notice. Daily Wire is still trying to upscale and make movies. Critical Drinker has made a movie; I’ve not seen it yet and I doubt that I would like it, but when he takes a deep breath and steps out of his cynical put downs, he has always acknowledged that making movies is hard. The YouTube podcast critics are in the peanut gallery, not the arena. If Woke Hollywood goes down, Critical Drinker and quite a few of his like minded buddies will have absolutely nothing to talk about. Taking cheap shots from the peanut gallery is easy. He has openly acknowledged that we need some of the critics to step up and get in the arena. I’m glad to see some of the upscaled freelance material finding an audience. May it grow.
Backrooms is also not my kind of movie, but I perked up when it hit big at the box office, I took a look at it ... and low and behold: A24; Renate Reinsve; Mark Duplass; Chiwetel Ejiofor. Whether you like/follow them or not, they are serious names that carry some weight, at a stage in their careers at which they aren’t going to throw themselves at cheap, low budget cash grab trash. That doesn’t mean the movie will actually be good (or to my taste), but some credible people were willing to take it on. I’ll probably see it in the theater just for that reason.
The writer/director, btw, is a 20 year old YouTuber who must have been a terminal computer geek as a kid. He started out with video games and music while still in elementary school. He started doing shorts and small web series in middle and high school. He apparently developed a cult following in a tiny niche market online, and he attracted enough attention that here he is at age 20 with a major breakout film.
The big studios are stuck in a high cost production model and remain oriented to the sequels, prequels, and spin-offs because they’re afraid to take chances with big bucks at stake. And they regularly make $50, $100, and $150 million flops. They’re ripe for the taking if some creative gunslingers and wildcatters can find footing.
So again, if you want to take a swipe at Woke Hollywood and the BigTech/streaming Borg, get off the couch, buy a ticket, and support an indie movie. Cut Netflix, Disney, Apple, Amazon, etc. out of the loop.
really? I dont have a subscription
Here’s a historical film i bet no one here saw. “Death by Lightning “ - Garfield assassination. Cast well, so excellent acting, IMO well written l, movie does great job of giving one a feel and understanding of the times and issues.
Thanks
No I never have heard of it.
Rubi is full of low budget indie enjoyable flicks. I get Netflix for free and don’t even bother with any of their garbage.
