India is actually trying to forcibly create a “nation”.

In actuality India is a union of multiple “nations” - the Punjabis (many of whom are Sikhs) are culturally, linguistically, religiously and by genetic mix different from say the people who live in Calcutta (Bengalis) or those in Bombay (Maharashrians) or in Madras (Tamils) or in Bangalore (Kannadigas) or in Hyderabad (Telugu).

Each of these groups have a different language - and not only a different language, but a different SCRIPT (writing) and millennia of separate history

Imho no - the shape of the India subcontinent is not a "British empire foul-up"

Let me explain why

1. India is a civilizational construct - like Europe - multiple different nations
2. It did have a "roman empire' or 'zhou dynasty' in the form of the Mauryan empire

but they didn't last long, and unlike China, didn't reunite under another dynasty

3. It HAD a chance to reunite in the 900s under the Rashtrakutas, but then the Mohammedans invaded

4. the Mohammedans spent the next 800 years slaughtering their way to the south

5. The Hindu Marathas and Sikh Punjabi empires did curtail this, but it was the BRitish who broke the back of the Mohammedans, especially in 1857 (though they HAD allied with the Mohammedans earlier)

6. The partition was partly the British fault, but not only

So If the british hadn't come, india would be a patchwork of individual nations - but many would be dominated by Mohammedans

It seems they are charging the family with carrying their ceremonial knives that the Sikhs have been allowed to carry all along. Those knives are truly a cultural thing but those folks left that culture andshould be expected to conform their habits to their new culture. Or is there a Western culture anymore?
