The Atlanta train passenger who was slaughtered in a shocking daylight weekend attack was reportedly stabbed nearly two dozen times in what cops are calling a horrific random assault.
John Elijah Matthews, 25, was caught on chilling surveillance footage boarding a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s (MARTA) Saturday morning and hovering over 66-year-old Margaret Swan before allegedly pulling out a knife and slitting her throat, according to a warrant obtained by 11Alive.
The unwitting passenger, sitting alone, began screaming and trying to escape as the violent brute allegedly held her down and stabbed her 18 to 20 times in an unprovoked attack.
Matthews — reportedly homeless — then hurled Swan to the floor and stood over her as the train reached Oakland City Station, the warrant showed.
The accused assailant fled the train while allegedly still brandishing a knife, as the victim lay motionless inside the rail car in a large pool of blood.
MARTA authorities quickly arrested Matthews on the train platform after horrified riders described what he was wearing, the warrant said.
First responders attempted to save the gutted woman before she died.

It’s time for concealed carry be required by all subway riders.
Nope.
No 66 year old white woman would be riding the train alone in that neighborhood, or anywhere else in Atlanta if they are smart.
Stay off subways. I don’t even say be armed. That kind of knife attack happens before one can draw and shoot.
One class of murderers would not be fazed. They cannot think of the future, only what it occurs to them to d right now. Tomorrow is a myth. All those horrible consequences, electric chair, hanging, hell, even hang-draw-and-quarter, even done after a quick trial and execution within 48 hours. Nothing beyond that RIGHT NOW means anything to them. In a system that is just as likely to release them if they promise not to do bad things anymore, of course, the incentive to murder and steal spreads to those who can envision consequences if there is no likelihood of having to actually face them.
I live in Georgia about 30 miles outside of Atlanta. I went to the Fox5 Atlanta website to see why I missed it. It was mentioned but not as a major story because it competed with other murders and deaths. This is exactly why I rarely if ever venture inside of the perimeter.
As an aside I worked for one of the subcontractors that was involved in the initial phases of the Marta subway project and later worked directly for Marta. I don’t miss it all.
