A 50 year-old Florida woman was viciously mauled to death by a pair of bloodthirsty pit bulls, only to be found by her heartbroken husband who said he’ll “never get the image out of my mind.”
Donnell Smith returned to his Brevard County home shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday — after helping neighbors across the street — and noticed his wife, Jodi Cowan, and their small dog had disappeared, according to WESH 2 News.
Smith then suddenly heard Cowan’s cries for help in the distance, the outlet reported.
“I saw the silhouette of the two dogs dragging my wife down the road, off into the grass in front of the truck down there,” Smith said.
Cowan was found lying on the grass in a pool of blood with dog bites all over her body, her husband said.
The beasts — who live in the neighborhood and were known to terrorize the community — apparently returned and tried to drag Cowan away again.
“I pulled my knife out, you know, just swinging it with one hand and holding the blood with the other, trying to stop her from bleeding,” a distraught Smith said...
“They must have been chasing our little dog, and she went to save her little dog to get him,” he said.
The grieving husband claimed the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office were aware of the pit bulls past terrorizing the neighborhood — but never did anything about them...
Neighbors told FOX35 that the pit bulls were frequently left outside and had previously attacked passersby.
One resident said they had been previously trapped in their vehicle for 30 minutes while the duo surrounded their vehicle. Another neighbor recently called animal control with concerns and even bought pepper spray for protection.

Roger Waters must’ve been in a bad way when he wrote the lyrics to “Dogs”. He and the band managed to make it sound like music from hell. It’s “heavy music”, it rocks and it rolls, and you can dance to it but why bother?
Dogs
You got to be crazy, gotta have a real need
Gotta sleep on your toes, and when you’re on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You got to strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You’ll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it’s gonna get harder, harder, and harder as you get older
Yeah, and in the end you’ll pack up, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer
And when you lose control, you’ll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it’s too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone
Dragged down by the stone
Gotta admit that I’m a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I’m just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don’t stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone’s expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
Everything’s done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone’s a killer
Who was born in a house full of pain?
Who was trained not to spit in the fan?
Who was told what to do by the man?
Who was broken by trained personnel?
Who was fitted with collar and chain?
Who was given a pat on the back?
Who was breaking away from the pack? (Breaking away)
Who was only a stranger at home? (Only a stranger)
Who was ground down in the end? (Ground down)
Who was found dead on the phone? (Found dead)
Who was dragged down by the stone?
Who was dragged down by the stone?
all pit bulls and their owners should be exterminated ...
When I lived in Alaska, just about once a year there was a news story about huskies killing one of the children — usually an infant — in a family. Prior to that they were sweet and loving dogs. Then one day they went berserk for no apparent reason.
“”””A deadly dog attack raises questions about why two large dogs that neighbors say were always running loose weren’t taken away from the dog owner sooner.
Jodi Cowan, 50, died from dog bites Tuesday on Blue Bonnet Drive in Sharpes near the Brevard County jail. (snip)
“Sparvero also checked records at the same address and found out that animal services gave two tickets, previously, for animals at large in 2024 and 2025.”””””
You linked to the article that tells us who killed the woman, the Sheriff’s department.
Locally our animal control was sufficient since the dogs getting loose weren’t threatening people and were only scary to a few little old ladies, but then one old man shot one in the pack and things tightened up from the Sheriffs and the owners have improved since they lost that one dog, I think the department gave them the serious talking to and it almost entirely cleared it up.
At the very first hint of a careless pattern from an owner with dangerous dogs, then the system needs to swoop in, when people die these horrible suburban animal deaths then the authorities need to be investigated to see if they let it happen.
By the way, the dog owners tried to sue the old man who shot one of the pack inside of his own yard (the dog died in the street and false accusations were made), but my cameras had picked up the entire scene and cleared him, which is another point of friction between me and the drug dealers, lol, I really annoy the criminal element since I moved in here.
And that's the rub. What's gonna happen when she feels threatened, whether the threat is real or not?
Yup, 13 rd mag. Biggest gun mistake I made was selling mine in early 80s to buy a smith double action 59, biggest jam machine I ever owned.
That’s right.
If you can hit with the .357 its a killer of 4 or 2 legged critters.
Sure 12 gauge double 00 buck is better, but it draws attention when you walk around the neighborhood with it on a shoulder strap.
If I understand the law in FL correctly, the worst thr owner can’t charged with criminally is a Class A misdemeanor. Thr penalties: Up to 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
Doesn’t sound like the owner was too impressed.
I walk 3-4 miles every day out here in the country. Experience tells me that when attacked by a dog, a person could have a shotgun in their hand and still would not have time to stop a charging dog from attacking.
Another thing I have figured out. Most times a dog alone might bark and threaten, but that is all. IF however the dogs owner is there too, that dog is much more likely to attack. He thinks he is protecting his owner.
Screw that. Shoot the dogs and hang the owners.
Shot placement.
Agree should be open season on pit bulls they are bred to kill.
Outlaw ownership of pitbulls. Nothing good comes from them. This is just another example, the latest example of a horrible ongoing problem that people who love these beasts can’t see. “Oh MY my pit bulls are the sweetest things, they would never do something like that.”
Just wait. I’m sick of all the innocents being slaughtered by these real life monsters.
That’s the one that made Kimberly Guilfoyle famous
Loose Pitbulls get shot and buried around here, post haste, unless they act in a charming manner.
I have a neighbor in a good neighborhood that has two of them with heads the size of basketballs. When he walks them, he has trouble controlling them and they’re two of the reasons I CC when I take my lab for a walk.
I have always had a lot of confidence in knives and with a dog pack I want a good knife in my free hand to help me protect the pistol hand and also to deliver damage on that side of my body and to draw blood from those side attacks if it is a pack melee taking pieces off me from different angles, I keep a tether on those knives to help with retention because I’m under the impression that in a big dog attack they will go for the weapon holding arms.
I also like two knives on me in walks exposed to outside dogs because if it is a violent pack attack I agree with you that picking them off with a pistol in that intimate mess of overwhelming violence might not work, plus you may lose the pistol anyway, as far as shotguns, while escorting one woman to her home when she knocked on my door while on a walk, afraid of some dogs that were loose, I chose a shotgun as my gun and carried it in my hands, although I never carry one around I would prefer it in a dog attack.
What I’m thinking.
“Pit bulls, gimme dats and illegals. Life would be so much sweeter without”
And democrats...but I repeat myself.
