Every Cuban has a story

I am really proud of our family and how they fought back against communism, especially on the day that this criminal was indicted.

As my late parents used to say, every Cuban “tiene su cuento,” which was their way of saying that everyone has a story.

Raul Castro’s indictment reminded me of my father’s cousin, Ignacio Segurola. My father and two brothers, plus Ignacio, grew up together in a small town in central Cuba. They went to Jesuit schools, played baseball, rode bicycles, and did some girl-watching. My father became a banker, Ignacio became a doctor, another one an architect, and the other a draftsman. All four got married and were living a pretty typical Cuban version of “Father knows best” until communism blew up the plan.

In 1961, around the time of the Bay of Pigs, Ignacio was arrested for being critical of the communist influence and cooperating with anti-Castro rebels. The secret police came to his office and took him away. And he spent the next 14 years in a political prison with a phony trial. He eventually left Cuba in 1975 and worked as a doctor until his death in 2017.

As a young boy in Cuba, my brother, sister, and I loved whenever Ignacio paid us a visit. He always brought gifts and surprises. It was like having an extra uncle!

Like many others of his generation, he ended up in a political prison and had to endure all of the humiliation and torture that came with that. He was remembered by his fellow prisoners as #27336, and the doctor who performed miracles to save the others from mosquito bites, bleeding, and some of the beatings they took for refusing to accept the communist creed. These were men of steel and did not break at all.

There are many instances of that. I believe the Saddam Husseins of the world need to face the music in the public square. Yassar Arafat died in a French hospital, perhaps poisoned. Neuremburg.

Are show trials winners’ justice? What about Ceauchescau/Kadaffy? A trial might not happen if they survive the purges.

I agree. Fidel Castro beat us. Our only consolation wll be if Raul dies in our custody-naturally.

We hired a young man who successfully gained legal residency status in USA from Cuba. He’s one of our best employees. His stories of Cuba make your skin crawl. No rights at all.

Worth repeating.
