A Sikh man accused of the murder of a first-year university student has told a court that he had acted in self-defence after the teenager had racially abused him and knocked his hair out of his turban before grabbing it.
Vickrum Digwa is on trial at Southampton Crown Court charged with the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, from Chafford Hundred, Essex, in Belmont Road in Southampton, on December 3 2025.
The 23-year-old is also charged with carrying a knife in public and his mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, is accused of assisting an offender by removing a weapon from the scene.
The court has heard that Digwa was carrying a kirpan – a religious knife – with a 21cm blade which the prosecution says caused five stab wounds to Mr Nowak, including two to the back of his legs and a fatal wound to the chest.
The defendant told the court that he had been walking near to his home when he stepped on to the road when he saw Mr Nowak walking towards him, looking “drunk”, not walking in a straight line and “stumbling a little”.

The article doesn’t mention the police’s initial response.
Here’s a excerpt from the BBC:-
Previously, the court heard the University of Southampton first year student was walking back to his accommodation from a night out, after drinking to a level below the drink-drive limit.
Jurors were told the attack, which resulted in five stab wounds or cuts, was not witnessed and Nowak tried to escape by climbing over a fence.
Police initially handcuffed the victim before discovering his fatal injury a short time later, the court previously heard.
Digwa, of St Denys Road, Southampton, said he did not tell police he had stabbed Nowak because he was “scared”.
His mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, is also on trial and denies assisting an offender by removing a weapon from the murder scene.

Now comes the most insulting and enraging part of this story - the defense is going to slander the victim by saying he was drunk, abusive, dangerous and threatening to the poor defendant. And probably made racist statements to boot. And the victim won’t be able to defend himself from the slander.
Someone says something so it’s OK to stab/kill them back in the old country
“A Sikh man accused of the murder of a first-year university student has told a court that he had acted in self-defence after the teenager had racially abused him”. Racial abuse must be enough.
Yes I couldn’t fit in all his protestations (nor did I want to)_ but they’re along those lines
The race-card is even more potent in the UK
From what I read on another thread is that the phone video is the fly in the ointment for old Vickrum.
Also, the defendants mother is on trial for assisting and hiding the blade
This is a case where the mob may have to take the law into its own hands.
Where are applications to join?
The victims BAC was below .08, so the “drunk” part is going to be tough.
After he bled out in their custody because they assumed since he was white he wasn't worth checking on.
I thought I read elsewhere that he had the supposed ceremonial knife, but another larger knife was the murder weapon. Perhaps that was a different stabbing case.
I have a ceremonial Glock.
Keep importing cultural incompatibles and expect more of this

It’s not that just anyone can stab/kill someone for a wrong look or word. It’s one thing if the stabber is brown/black and the stabbee is white and another thing altogether if the races are reversed.
Sikh man openly carrying an 8-inch blade in public is permitted, white man caught carrying a 3 1/2 inch pocket-knife in his pocket and it’s off to gaol.
The white kid bled out while handcuffed because he was accused by the stabber of racism.
Isn't cultural enrichment just grand?
It’s crazy that a society that refuses to let its citizens arm themselves carves out an exception for one religious minority.
