Fans who watched Ronda Rousey defeat Gina Carano in just 17 seconds in the main event of Netflix's first-ever MMA card on Saturday night couldn't help but wonder whether the fight was rigged, but one of Rousey's longtime friends came to her defense.
Former WWE Superstar and MMA veteran Shayna Baszler, who has been Rousey's close friend and training partner for years, took to social media to point out that Rousey has a history of speedy finishes, as 17 seconds isn't even her fastest victory:
Rousey, who was fighting for the first time since 2016, took Carano down just seconds into the fight before locking in her trademark armbar and earning the submission victory. It was Carano's first professional fight since 2009.
Rousey confirmed after the fight that she has no intentions of continuing her MMA career, and she will focus on continuing to grow her family.
Fans who were hoping for more will have to be satisfied with the 17 seconds they got from Rousey in her final fight on Saturday.

I've heard of Ronda Rousey, because she got a lot of attention and was a Bernie Sanders supporter.
Gina Carano had a lot of support on FR, and was fired by Disney for being conservative. I don't know anything about her as a fighter.
It's my understanding both women have been retired for a while. But how did Carano lose within 17 seconds?
I’ve only been retired for 1 year, but I am now picturing a day when I can go to the office, for 17 seconds, then walk out and collect a nice paycheck. I’d like that.
Submission hold.
Seriously, I don’t get people who enjoy watching women fighting each other.
Rousey attacked from the start by tackling Carano and putting Carano on her back. Rousey pulled her head out of Carano’s hold, then she smacked Carano a couple of times and went for the arm bar. Rousey is known for the arm bar. It’s what she does. Carano tapped out. Both of these women are well passed prime, and neither could stand up to some of the other ladies out there now. This was purely for money and nothing more, but I didn’t see anything that made me think it was faked. Carano didn’t expect the full-on tackle from the get-go and lost. That’s it.
If the armbar was Rousey’s signature move, why wasn’t Carano more prepared for it?
They did it for the money, but did anyone who paid to see it feel like they got their money’s worth?
Suckers.
Absolutely fixed. There was footage of Rousey practicing the very same moves bon the mat just before the match. Couple punches from opponent, couple punches from her, takedown and end. Totally bogus match.
“The night of the fight, you’re going to feel a slight sting....”
Ronda Rousey competed in judo in the Olympics, winning 3 bronze medals.
Always submission specialist in the UFC this is no surprise to me, as most of her wins were accomplished that way....and many literally in seconds just like this one.
As a matter of fact, what pretty much ended her UFC career was a UFC match against Holly Holm.
Holm didn’t allow Rousey to take her to the mat which exposed Rouseys’ shortcomings as a boxer.
That was the beginning of the end of Ronda Rouseys MMA career.
Shayna Bazler
It’s Netflix aka Obamavision. Home of the shock value contests. Gimmicks Galore.
I saw the final blow in that fight. Afterward, Rousey realized that she could be maimed or killed if she continued. She rearranged her priorities.
Wins in 17 seconds?
That is going to be controversial forever.
You should read post 11.
Also, from AI: 👇
Ronda Rousey’s professional UFC submission victories range from 14 to 66 seconds, with her historic finish against Cat Zingano holding the record for the fastest submission in UFC title fight history. Known for her signature armbar, her complete timeline of UFC submission victories includes:
Cat Zingano: 14 seconds (UFC 184, 2015)
Alexis Davis: 16 seconds (UFC 175, 2014)
Miesha Tate: 66 seconds (UFC 168, 2013)
Liz Carmouche: 49 seconds (UFC 157, 2013)
Miesha Tate: 66 seconds (Strikeforce, 2012) (Note: Strikeforce bout prior to UFC tenure)
So you see, Rousey is no stranger to quick submissions.
I did too.
Continuing in MMA or retiring and using your skills and reputation in Hollywood......pretty much a no brainer IMO.
Rousey was a legit, highly decorated, world class, 6th degree Judo blackbelt. Carano had a limited Muay Thai career (at a time when women's Muay Thai was even more niche than women's MMA), then fought at a time when women's MMA was essentially a circus sideshow. I doubt the result would have been any different had Gina signed with the UFC back when Ronda was champion.
Like Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston? (Yeah, I’m that old)
