Claudine Longet, chanteuse and actress whose career ended when she shot her lover

Claudine Longet, who has died aged 84, was an actress and chanteuse who became one of the few French female artists to have sold significant numbers of records in the US. But unlike compatriots such as Edith Piaf and Françoise Hardy, she was never acclaimed as a major figure in global popular music: her hits were anodyne cover versions of songs such as the Beatles’ Here There and Everywhere and Good Day Sunshine.

She played the female lead, opposite Peter Sellers, in Blake Edwards’s 1968 film The Party, but she was best known for her appearances on the weekly television show hosted by her husband, Andy Williams. She was, in Williams’s words, “a beautiful, athletic, slender, petite brunette with large doe eyes”.

From her spouse’s side, she radiated a mixture of glamour and wholesome domesticity. On the set of Williams’s famous Christmas specials, she would cast protective glances towards the couple’s young children as they unwrapped parcels under the studio tree.

Did she shoot Sabich? Undoubtedly. Was it murder? Probably.

I remember when this happened. I was in college. My memory is she basically got away with murder, and it was pretty obvious.

She was sexy and beautiful and she came off as incredibly sweet and gentle as long as you could overlook the killing stuff.

I guess we could all say that she was the original “not guilty” girl.

Longet was eventually found guilty of negligent homicide, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Yep, that was it.

But that was 30 days longer than what Alec Baldwin got.

“”””I had a crush on her…”””””

Who didn’t, but seeing her walk away from a straight forward murder killed the magic.

Who could forget the “Claudine Longet Invitational Ski Tournament” on “Saturday Night Live,” back when the show was funny?

But that was 30 days longer than what Alec Baldwin got.

Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days for drunk driving, but was released after serving 23 days.

“Longet found herself dancing at the Tropicana Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas in 1961. As part of the Folies Bergère revue, the 18-year-old met 32-year-old crooner Andy Williams when he helped her after her car broke down. The pair married on Dec. 15, 1961, in Los Angeles.”

“Aspen was flooded with cocaine at the time, and Spider Sabich’s good looks and fame attracted invites to countless parties. But sources close to Claudine Longet claimed that she prohibited Sabich from attending a “Best Breast” party and that she even threw a wine glass at his head in a fit of jealousy.”

“She claimed she had found the Luger knock-off on the day of Sabich’s death and allegedly pointed it at him while making “bang-bang” noises when it suddenly misfired, killing him.”

‘A defense witness testified that the safety mechanism on the gun was faulty and that the firing mechanism was greasier than it should be. These factors made it highly plausible that the gun went off by accident.”

“After the four-day trial, jurors deliberated for a few hours before finding her guilty of criminally negligent homicide.

“She was sentenced to 30 days of her choosing in prison and a $250 fine.”

“the family of Spider Sabich filed a $780,000 civil suit against her.”

Claudine was allowed to serve her sentence on weekends, in order to “be with her children.”

A classic, that could have only come from the sick mind of Michael O’Donoghue.

That was hilarious. I was a teenager when that aired and I laughed so hard.

I remember the SNL cast “apologized” for it the following week and the sarcasm was palpable. I think a lot of Karens of that era had complained.

The Gary Gilmore Christmas carols were funny too.

I always had her, Andy Williams and Ethel Kennedy as an odd trio in my mind. I was young when this all happened, but I picked up on it. If I knew then what tawdry or sordid meant, I would have words to describe it.
