Archival photos that show a different side of 'Star Wars'
SF Gate ^ | May the 4th, (be with you) 2026 | Dan Gentile

All around the world, “Star Wars” nerds are spending Monday celebrating the holiest day in the galaxy: May the Fourth. Stemming from a cheeky pun based on a bit of Jedi jargon (“May the force be with you”), the day has become an excuse to rally around the lore of what very well may be the greatest science-fiction series of all time (no disrespect to the “Star Trek” fans out there).

If there’s a ground zero for the “Star Wars” universe (aside from Tatooine), it’s definitely the Bay Area. George Lucas originally moved here after graduating from film school at the University of Southern California in the 1960s and has since made it the headquarters of his company, basing Lucasfilm in San Rafael (it moved to San Francisco in 2005) and later starting Industrial Light and Magic in San Francisco’s Presidio and building Skywalker Ranch 40 minutes north of the city in Nicasio.

I walked out on it since I thought it was going to be great science fiction and I thought it was stupid instead, but everyone like it so much that I decided to go see it as the space adventure movie they were talking about, and in that mood I got it, and thought it was great.

The first one was the only one I enjoyed, I think I saw the second one which was probably OK, but I passed on the later ones.

I know Rodenberry at one time said his vision for Star Trek:TOS was “Wagon Train to the Star”. That never made sense to me. I’ve seen enough “Wagon, etc” and “ST:TOS” episodes to say I see no connection. Hornblower connection yes! The plots, Kirk characterization, etc a very strong connection!

I’ve seen the movie but don’t remember that scene.
I’ll watch it again.

Fervent and active Trekker here. Did the fan cons and fanzines route for years. Wonderful people.

Star Trek - Born Again Trek - Julia Ecklar
https://youtu.be/vARV4JXK3R0

Also loved the movies.

Star Trek 2009 et al - Lets Make Some Memories - Jane Olivor
https://youtu.be/-jy_WXbRgNs

Only series I got into besides TOS was Deep Space 9.

Deep Space 9 - The Load Out & Stay - Jackson Browne
https://youtu.be/w5pEUX2KAO8

Stood in line for all the early Star Wars movies.

Star Wars - One Step Forward - Desert Rose Band
https://youtu.be/VqddcPRv6AE

But just got turned off by the sequel/prequels. Only way I followed them was with Weird Al.

Star Wars - The Saga Begins - “Weird Al” Yankovic

If nobody is wishing you a May the Fourth with you, you are looking in Alderaan places and talking to Alderaan people.

Love the original. Weakest episodes were the 3rd season.

The first 15 of year one are great. My biggest favorite is “Balance of Terror”.

I saw it on tv when young. Back then I thought the modified corvette was really cool.

I root for The Empire.

Disney has just simply thrown away General Thrawn and The Order of the Hand.

They could have made Heir to the Empire for the amount they threw away on that freaky Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel compound.

Thanks, I just watched a video of her at the George Lucas roast.

One funny moment from the Bright Lights documentary that cracked me up was her addiction to Coca-Cola and cigarettes.
The documentary was during the time where they were filming one of the last Star Wars prequels.

In one scene a personal trainer hired by the film studio shows up to her house to make sure she exercises, eats a healthy lunch with plenty of vegetables, etc.

At one point the personal trainer takes her cigarette from her and also throws away the open Coke that she's drinking. She says yes of course, accepts it, and continues her prescribed workout.
As soon as the trainer leaves, she casually pulls a pack of cigs out of a drawer, lights one up, and cracks open an ice cold Coke while casually chatting with the documentary crew.

I couldn't stop laughing!

For better or worse, she lived life on her own terms.

Yes it was a live action comic book. If you accepted that it was enjoyable. However each sequel was less so. I saw the second one. I can’t remember if I saw the third one. If I did see it, having no recollection of it shows its impression on me.

So do I.

The Empire had cooler uniforms, gear, and ships.

In high school, I was in wood shop, metal shop, and plastics. I looked up to the upper classmen in automotive shop.

They got to build and restore cars. Seniors only. A couple years later, the car program was cut. I never got to help rebuild a car for a senior project.

Nowadays, high schools have cut everything outside of lgbt+ awareness, and football and basketball. No band, orchestra, shop classes, home-ec, typing, art, drama, finance. Civics.

My wood shop teacher had at least nine fingers. My metal shop teacher had all ten, but some visible burns. My Jr high science teacher is sitting in the Washington state pen for kidnapping and raping two of his students. (he’s) Still alive after over thirty years.

Kids today have no options in school to pursue crafts and trades. All that tax money goes to administrators and sportsball.

A few years ago our local district had to pay over $250k just to fire the super.

I really like Star Trek for a long time.

Then somewhere along the line I figured out the Federation was a creepy militarized totalitarian communist government.
