Jose Ortiz didn’t just save his best for last to win the Kentucky Derby.
The jockey did it the hard way by literally surging back from last place.
Ortiz rallied 23-1 long shot Golden Tempo from way back to claim the 152st Derby on Saturday, beating his older brother by a neck. As expected, Irad Ortiz Jr. went over to pat his brother and congratulate him for getting the best out of a colt Jose Ortiz believed had potential.

“And here comes the winnnneeeeeeeeeeeeer............Feetlebaum!”
Fab! Now I’m gonna tune into the miss America pageant… oh wait. It’s not 1979 anymore.
Seems fishy.
Come at me bro or pass me.
I remember Strike the Gold, son of Easy Goer. He had a consistent habit of running dead last only to make a tremendous run at the end & win. I think that’s how he won the derby in 1991.
Derby winner.
What especially annoyed me about this derby is that the winning trainer is a woman, so she is being celebrated as the FIRST WOMAN to train a derby winner. Plenty of other women have accomplished excellent things in Thoroughbred racing, but because this person is the FIRST WOMAN, that's the big story all over the place. She even goes on Good Morning America tomorrow morning.
I am so, so tired of the Left always trumpeting the FIRST things that divide us: the first this, the first that, and the first other thing. *sigh*
“ Seems fishy.”

Seemed like outstanding jockeying of a well-trained but underrated horse.
Who says it’s the Left saying it. Horse racing (and I’m not a big fan) is male dominated. That the trainer was the first woman to train a Detby winning horse, I say that is wonderful. Congrats to her.
[Verse 5]
I bet on the grey mare
I bet on the bay
If I’d have bet on ol’ Stewball
I’d be a free man today. Not much better.
What is really fishy is that the woman commentator picked this very long shot to win just before the race. That struck me as very odd at the time.
Yes, I wonder how many 23 to 1 go on to win the race and who had money on it.
That seems a little odd to me when a horse comes from behind to win. As I said before not a real fan, but I have to wonder how this horse would do in the Belmont & the preakness. Either that or something funny is going on here.
Whaaaat a finish.

A horse can only run at its top speed for a very limited distance, a few hundred yards to a quarter mile. The jockey and the trainer decide where they want their horse to do that top speed. A horse can run at a pretty fast speed one to 2 miles, but not at its top speed.
Large increases in cost with questionable increases in performance
can be tolerated only in race horses and women.

23-1. I remember years ago having a chance to bet on a horse called Lizard Lips at those odds. Just a hunch on the funny name. I changed my mind at the last second. Guess what happened? Lizard Lips came out first. Don’t even remember how my horse placed 😭.
Unless the horse was Secretariat. After his supernatural Belmont win, he kept on going.
A phenomenal ride. Excellent strategy.
