Republicans Set To Best Democrats in Mid-Decade Redistricting Battle
Realclearpolitics ^

The fun kicked off in Texas last July, following President Trump's urging, pushed the Texas Legislature to redistrict the Lone Star State's congressional map in a pro-GOP direction. Missouri and North Carolina soon followed, prompting California Gov. Gavin Newsom to get in on the action: Golden State voters approved the use of a new map last November. Virginia voters narrowly approved a new congressional map that heavily favors Democrats. This week, Florida responded with a Gov. Ron DeSantis-led redistricting that heavily favors Republicans. In the interim, some other states, such as Ohio and Utah, redistricted for non-voluntary reasons such as litigation or statutory requirement. Indiana, famously defied Trump and refused to voluntarily redraw their maps.

Agreed. NW Indiana here, District One.

It would take very little gerrymandering to turn my district “R”. If you google it, my district is projected as D+1 now.

So sad the RINO’s caved.

Perhaps the 2030 redistricting should be more 52-48. Most will be competitive but deep red or blue states will have to have a few 100% blue districts for that to work.

Based on the demographics, if you take that “bump” out making the east boundary straight and straighten out the southern boundary to balance the numbers you’d go from a D+1 district to an R+3 or R+4 district - and it would be even more compact/contiguous than it is now - not even remotely the “major gerrymander” you state - quite the opposite.

Correct - in many of these Republican controlled states, the Republicans actually gerrymandered to give the Democrats a district or two for the sake of "fairness." The new maps Republicans drew in other states did away with this and they are contiguous and compact - even moreso than before. Less gerrymandering nationwide results in fewer Dem districts - contiguous, compact districts result in more Republican districts - no matter where it is done.

“The fun kicked off in Texas last July, following President Trump’s urging, pushed the Texas Legislature to redistrict the Lone Star State’s congressional map in a pro-GOP direction.”

Wrong.

The “fun” started at least 2 years ago when Alabama and Louisiana were each forced to implement a mid-decade racist gerrymander which deprived 2 White Republicans of their U.S. House seats.

Democrats have been doing this exact thing *mid-decade* (and other times) for YEARS. Last decade it was Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Net cost to the GOP was at least half a dozen seats, and that’s being charitably conservative about how screwed they were.

But: “waah, waah, waah, Trump started it!!!!!”

Even media types on “our” side who should (and do) know better always fail to state the truth.

Correct.

And even before that in states like Illinois - just look at that ridiculous map and its squiggly lines, spider webs, etc. and compare it to the supposedly ‘gerrymandered’ map of Texas and its compact, contiguous districts.

Republicans finally started responding...and that’s the scandal according to the media - not what they were responding to - but the fact they started to respond to the Democrats having been doing this themselves for so long. Just another of endless examples of the blatant dishonesty of the media.

It is ridiculous to suggest those two congressional districts in Louisiana represented anyone - especially the 2nd congressional district. Those people were not represented - impossible. It is a joke of a district.

Good news! The Indiana primary is in 4 days and 10 of these turncoats are up! How many of them will fall? You tell me(us)Jim Buck is 80 years old I do believe.

Illinois’ current congressional districts are commonly referred to as the “Strips of Bacon” districts. :-)

And if they aren’t referred to that way, they damn well should be. New York originally tried to screw Republicans as hard as possible, but since that plan failed to get court approval Illinois easily takes the “John Burton Award” (remember him?) as the gerrymander of the decade.

Of course that was before Virginia.

I’m an “Indiana fan” (politically) and I see all over Twitter where insurgent conservatives are making the maximum possible effort to unseat the RINOs who quashed the 2025 redistricting plan.

What I’m not sure of is how much establishment money is backing the RINOs, but we can probably safely assume they all have major cash advantages.

But hard work can sometimes overcome that, and RINO incumbents (Rick Niemeyer leaps to mind) are in a complete panic and are spewing all sorts of lies and hate about their challengers. Hopefully Indiana conservatives are mad enough and motivated enough to pull off some sizable upsets.

One of the IN Senate cowards, Kyle Walker, chose not to run again. He represents a marginal and deteriorating (was R+4 as of 2022, now it’s “even”) suburban district and I have no doubt he is pulling hard to be replaced by a Democrat in November. He has a good chance of getting his wish, unfortunately.

What about Jim Buck? Asking for pas.

Then there’s the Roderick Bray fella due up in ‘28. If we can get rid of enough of his slimey friends perhaps he’ll call it a career-or run for higher office.

Here's that Louisiana map - there is no community, region, etc. that can possibly be represented by such a map - makes it difficult for both the congressman and the constituents to know for sure if they were even in this district. This is ridiculous. They will almost certainly have better, fairer representation with a redrawn map. Despite the false narrative, Republicans do not neglect the minority populations of their districts regarding constituency services. These people will be getting better constituency services.

“What about Jim Buck?”

Buck is in a panic too. The latest tactic of this senile old loser is to claim that his conservative opponent, Tracy Powell, likes to slaughter innocent puppies. Yes, really.

It’s time for Buck to go, but people have been saying that for years.

Buck has 4x the money of his opponent, most of it coming from the “Senate Majority PAC”, i.e. the “Incumbent Protection Slush Fund”.

Buck has never faced a primary opponent in his Senate career — until now. He’s handling it with grace and dignity. :-)

Cheerleading is not apathy. Our side wastes much time and energy on what is ineffective and does not prioritize for what is effective.

Between the redistricting, and the forced purging of voter rolls, this might be a once in a lifetime slam dunk for Republicans, at least in the House. This means that all eyes should be on the Senate, and the state races, to a much lesser extent.

Those darn Hoosier RINO’s that caved seemed to think they will get some democratic and independent votes if they caved to the democrats.

That is total BS,,,,as they will not get even one democrat vote, not ONE—yes they will get a few Independent votes, but those Independent votes will be dwarfed by the conservatives that would normally vote for them, but are pissed off, and just stay home.
