Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson laughed and seemed to encourage the notion that millionaires could leave the state of Washington while discussing her support for a progressive tax during an interview earlier this month.
“I think the claims that millionaires are going to leave our state are, like, super overblown. And if — the ones that leave, like, bye,” she said, which prompted cheers and laughter from the audience at the Seattle University event, Seattle University Conversations, which took place on April 14.
Wilson was asked if she believed progressive taxes were an “easy” and “promising” solution to the tax climate in the area. She said she never thought they were easy, but said she was excited about the millionaire tax that passed in the state.
“In general, we still have the very regressive tax system, and my office is doing a lot of work to look at what our options are in terms of progressive taxation,” she said. “We do have more flexibility at the city, at the county, in terms of our taxing authority. And at the same time, I believe what I said before, which is that, it’s not good for Seattle’s business environment, for example, for the cost of doing business in downtown Seattle to be wildly out of step with, for instance, neighboring Bellevue,” she said.
Wilson said that she was looking at progressive tax options that don’t increase the cost of employing people in Seattle.
“We have a large structural budget deficit at the city that we’re going to have to figure out how to deal with in this upcoming budget cycle,” she added. “And my budget office, budget staff are hard at work trying to figure out both how we can use our revenue as effectively and efficiently as possible."

There’s a reason why Seattle loves coffee.
but not as much as it shuns degradation.
She’ll put the more left in The Left Coast, or should I say The Bereft Coast.
Katie is a woman, I think.
Does that still matter in Seattle?
Anybody remember the cartoon poster “the Last Gesture of Defiance”. With a mouse flipping off a bird of prey. I never figured the mouse was a communist. Now I wonder?
Reports are that she has never worked a previous job in her life (she is 43 years old). She was a “community organizer”. Her parents paid her bills. She is married but I don’t think he has a paying job either.
I guess she figures if her wealthy(?) parents can take care of her, other wealthy people can take care of the rest of Seattle.
Communists are dumb.
If you have something, you had to take it from someone else. Therefore, you are an offender, and the person you took it from is a victim.
This is why white men are bad, rich people are bad, corporations–even small businesses–are bad. This is why America is bad.
We can see how the natural progression of this kind of thinking created Wokeness and the concept of "privilege." Hard work/ambition is bad, learning is bad, punctuality is bad...even conscientiousness is bad. They are all bad because they are paths to merit and merit is the foundation of "privilege."
To the Left, merit means victimization.
Communists are insane...evil.
Let me explain an entity, say a government agency like the State of WA, City of Seattle or Sound Transit (a Regional Transit Authority) provides services in exchange for revenues. Those revenues can be fees for services (say ticket prices to ride on a light rail car or taxes paid that enable one to obtain services).
When gasoline road taxes are no longer tied to road services such as highway & bridge maintenance, there is an economic disconnect. When light rail ticket prices no longer cover even a small fraction of the annual price of the service to riders there is an economic disconnect. When State Millionaire taxes are charged for no service at all things get way out of hand.
Speaking of the Millionaire “Income” tax, I will digress for a moment. Millionaires, typically don't do their own taxes. They have CPA's, Financial Advisors and Tax attorneys who advise them on “optimal economic strategies.” If there is a tax, there is a way to legally structure something to reduce or avoid that tax.
The implication is that the revenues projected by the State are likely to be far less than anticipated because Millionaires employ smart and skilled professionals. That means that the tax, which was designed to only partially fill a budget gap created by out of control government spending is not going to work. Millionaires may leave and take their businesses with them or they may get advice on how to structure out-of-state corporations that compensate in “non-wage” methods the “millionaires” in ways that State tax law didn't anticipate. When the anticipated revenue doesn't come into the State, then government will either have to cut spending or find new sources of taxes such as lowering the threshold from millionaires to say ten's of thousand-aires.
The people paying taxes need to feel that they are receiving services from government in exchange for the tax money. The more governments push taxes on one group of people who get little to no service benefits from those taxes, the tax payers will figure out ways to stop paying the taxes, even if it means leaving or stopping whatever triggers the tax. That is just simple economics.
If you think the politicians are stupid fools just wait till you see the stupid fools who vote for them.
Typed that with AI, did you?
Bringing down the property values makes them easier to buy up. Especially if you free up a bunch of properties through bad policy.
The theory is that it can be reversed through good policy when those properties have been sold to vested interests.
I did some of the work. Not the hard part, though.
What ever. Been there, done that. Embrace the suck.
So she told the college pin heads that she’s destroying the economy and their future…and they applaude?!
Yea speaking of coffee… Even Starbucks is moving its HQ…
These damn companies, support the Democrats in WA, then they leave when they get what they want.
B@stards.
I think the Seattle mayor is supposed to be a woman 😂😂😂
