U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) jumped in the first quarter of 2026, compared to the previous quarter’s growth, the Commerce Department reported Thursday – a sign that the nation’s economy remains solid.

Real (inflation-adjusted) GDP increased at an annual rate of 2.0% in the first quarter after rising just 0.5% in the last three months of 2025, according to the report providing an advanced estimate of GDP. A second, updated estimate will be published May 28, to eventually be followed by the third (and final) estimate.

"The core of the economy remained solid in Q1, driven by the AI buildout and the tax cuts beginning to feed through," Michael Pearce, chief U.S. economist with Oxford Economics, said in a note to investors reported by CBS News:

“a sign that the nation’s economy remains solid.”

Yet why all the pissing, moaning and groaning about this “horrible economy”? What causes that?

I see “Help Wanted” and “Hiring” signs everywhere. Companies cannot find good, hard-working people.

No, I’m talking about all the polls and articles about how awful it is. Not about FReepers comments on articles. Most here are the opposite and don’t buy into the “Doom” zeitgeist.

Because it hasn't translated into lower prices and higher wages. It's hard to feel positive about AI datacenters being built when it costs more to fill up your car and your utilities are going up.

Those are typical left wing propaganda.

They all run the same thing. Probably written by AI.

It’s not Freepers that are bitching. Actual Freepers are very scarce. Anyone can post on Free Republic. It’s a public forum. Why don’t you stop bitching about freepers bitching and bitch about other people bitching who aren’t freepers?

You seem completely detached from reality, or maybe it’s all about, “I got mine, what’s the problem?”

Everything has nearly *doubled* in 6 years yet some people like you are unable to see any problem. Get real.

“hasn’t translated into lower prices”

I’m 74 and I have never lived in an era with declining prices. You do not want a deflationary environment. It is far worse than inflation. You should not expect declining prices.

If you look at the capabilities of today’s product (as well as what is available today) compared to two or three decades ago, you find things are SO much better. In 1960, the average grocery store had 6,000 products. Today it is 30,000 to 50,000 products with big supercenters hitting 60,000.

If your income is not keeping up, the solution is simple. I’ll leave it to you to figure it out.

LOL...we are retired and retirees get hit 10X harder than working people. We worked hard our entire lives, lived modestly, saved and saved. We planned for the future with 3% inflation. We did not anticipate 100% in 6 years. Yet we don’t bitch.

Life’s tough. So stuff it.

Positive articles are just articles. People have to feel it to believe it.

If it was so rosy, everyone would be feeling it and ignoring doom articles.

Companies cannot find good, hard-working people.

Companies are still offering absurdly low salaries or have ridiculous job requirements, unrelated to actual needs of the work. That will change, but the realization has yet to set in. Low-end or entry level jobs are still not paying well enough to be worth commuting any distance to perform. They are going unfilled, as you might expect.

In some fields, there are ongoing, large-scale layoffs which are dumping tens of thousands of experienced and senior level people into the "job market". That makes it hard for them to find a new job quickly, and they won't find one that pays as well as their previous job. It sucks to be them.

So yes, there is lots of pissing, moaning and groaning about this “horrible economy”. It is a lagging indicator which will continue for a while even after things do get better.
