Indian billionaire's son offers to save Escobar's hippos

An Indian billionaire's son has offered to help Colombia get rid of a problem it has grappled with for years - a herd of hippos linked to notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Escobar, who was shot dead by police in 1993, illegally imported exotic animals, including a male and a female hippopotamus - dubbed the "cocaine hippos".

...

Efforts failed to contain the herd's growth, with a lack of predators and the fertile and swampy Antioquia region providing perfect conditions for the native African animal to thrive.

Colombian environmentalists say the hippos, believed to be the biggest herd outside Africa, are an invasive species and have pushed away the native fauna.

Fishing communities along the Magdalena River have come under attack by hippos - one of the largest land animals, with adult males weighing up to three tonnes.

Hunters could take care of the problem in a week or two.

Hippos, despite being herbivorous, are very dangerous.

I was watching something on tv a couple months ago and they were firing darts at them, full of whatever it takes to make a hippo sterile.

As far as level of danger to humans, hippos are a lot more dangerous than elephants and rhinos.
They are very aggressive.

Similar in taste to beef. Richer, slight gamey with mild sweet flavor. Texture similar to lean beef.

Transporting scores of Hungry Hungry Hippos from Colombia to India would be incredibly expensive. It would probably take several trips back and forth. since no aircraft now existing could haul multiple Hippos all at once. They wouldn’t even be able to become airborne. All the alarms would be ringing.

If by boat, make sure a fueled up tugboat is trailing in the wake, just in case.

No. Hippos didn’t ask to be there, didn’t swim or fly over. Innocent victims do not deserve harsh treatment or death penalties. If they came on ships, ship them back. Not exactly rocket science.

Sterility darts? Actually a great idea. Far better than slaughtering the creatures who didn’t invade or even want to be there.

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm against wanton killing of wildlife. However, hippos are nasty violent creatures who kill more Africans than crocodiles. A ticket back to Africa would solve a lot of problems.

If someone can pay to ship them back to be with their own kind in Africa, I'm all for it. However, if no one opens his wallet, then euthanasia is reasonable. It's similar to the problem of wild boars in the USA. The best we can do with boars is euthanasia.

I spen a wonderful year on top of a mountain in Big Sur, CA with a view of the ocean a mile below.

There were wild boar in the woods there and I had two little grade-school kids. We were always worried about the wild boar, though they were good garbage collectors. We rented the house from the son of Mark Hopkins, railroad Baron and builder of that hotel on Nob Hill. He told us just to toss our garbage “over the edge” of hill near our back door. “The wildlife will take care of it.” And of course boar were part of that. Thankfully none of them attacked us. Though I did have a run-in with a rattler one afternon........

At least you had a beautiful location to deal with your troubles. Boars scare me more than snakes.

My eyesight is not so great and I am always afraid of stepping on a snake if I go back in the woods. Copperheads blend in PERFECTLY with the leaf litter.
