'Appearance Of Goodness' Vs. 'Reality Of Goodness': Elon Musk Explains Why Giving Is Hard…

Philanthropy among the world's wealthiest is under renewed scrutiny as donors debate what meaningful generosity looks like…difficulty comes from trying to ensure donations create real impact rather than good publicity, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said.

"The biggest challenge I find with my foundation is trying to give money away in a way that is truly beneficial to people," Musk said on the "WTF is" podcast, hosted by Nikhil Kamath. He added that it is easy to give money away "to get the appearance of goodness" and much harder to reach "the reality of goodness."

The Musk Foundation's philanthropy — roughly half of the $160 million the foundation distributed in 2021 and 2022 went to organizations tied to Musk, his companies, or his employees. The Times cited a $20 million donation to schools in Cameron County, Texas, after a SpaceX rocket explosion, and $10 million to the city of Brownsville, Texas, for downtown improvements near SpaceX operations.

MacKenzie Scott, the philanthropist and former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is one of the most visible philanthropic figures this year. She has given about $19.25 billion since 2020, according to her organization's website. Scott is best known for providing unrestricted grants, allowing organizations to decide how funds are used. Her wealth comes from her Amazon stake, and her net worth is about $40 billion.

In her latest round of giving, she made new contributions to historically Black colleges and universities, disaster recovery organizations, and education groups. These gifts followed earlier awards announced this year and were consistent with her trust-based approach. Scott rarely comments publicly beyond short notes posted when grants are issued.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

All the hoopla surrounding Trump’s ballroom funding brought me to this story.

Elon Musk has gone out to lend his VOICE to MAGA. His purchase of Twitter (X) saved free speech and arguably the 2024 election.

Mackenzie Scott gave $275 million to Planned Parenthood, largest private donation in its history. 🤢

Wish more were willing to part with their money though, and donate to things like infrastructure improvements. Not just donate, but oversee — instead of the government.

Trump's trying to do that, but the Dims are blocking it every way they can. The WH ballroom project isn't costing taxpayers a dime. And no president in history has as much experience with high end real estate development as Trump. The same with Trump 1.0's term and people/industries donating to build the wall.

:In March 2022, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $275 million to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and 21 of its regional affiliates. This is the largest single donation from an individual donor in the organization’s history. The unrestricted funds are aimed at improving health equity, addressing racial and structural barriers in healthcare, and strengthening reproductive health access.
Key Details of the Donation:

Historic Amount: The $275 million gift is the largest ever received by Planned Parenthood from one donor.
Targeted Impact: The funds are designed to support patient services, including birth control, health screenings, and abortion care, particularly in areas with increasing restrictions.
Affiliate Support: The donation was split between the national organization and 21 regional affiliates, such as Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri.
Focus on Equity: The donation aims to improve health outcomes and equity, with a specific focus on serving communities of color and reducing barriers to care.
Broader Philanthropy: This donation is part of Scott’s “Giving Pledge,” where she has donated over $12 billion to various organizations since her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, as reported by Forbes. “ AI copiolot

The only “health services” planned parenthood provides is abortion, which is murder, not a health service.

I understand how the lawfare applies to WH, but aside from that and even the presidency — there are things in billionaires’ own backyards that can use some upkeep and improvement: things they utilize too like: crumbling bridges, aging highways, graffiti-ed landmarks, etc...

It is harder than most might realize to actually help people without hurting them instead.

give a homeless man a $1,000 and he might be dead by the next day from an overdose (like what happened when Hulk Hogan when he gave some money to his brother)

I would think teaming up with a college you feel good about and giving them enough of an endowment that tuition can be free forever for all who attend, might be a good way of helping) But you would have to take time to pick the right one and make sure they will be teaching the right things now and in the future, so the money isn’t wasting teaching womens studies, and supporting DEI hires ect

the problem with that ... is money is fungible... so you give money for those specific things.. but then that frees up other money to spend on crap like more welfare ect.

Well I wouldn’t mind if more billionaires aimed to improve things - just superficially - and even name things after themselves. Like rundown historical buildings and public spaces…And as I said above: highways, bridges…Which they utilize too. Too many things in disrespute in our country.

I agree when your intention but as I said... If a city has money set aside to build a park. And some rich person gives them money to build the park... now they have extra money they had planned to spend on the park. And instead of giving it back, they will raise their salaries, or give out more welfare or hire more DEI employees ect.

It is so hard to help.

Well that’s why I say I wish that they — not just pay but oversee. :) Or get people they trust to do so…Manage the operations. Provide the timeline. Report back to them with spreadsheets of budgets…

Or just build more Rockefeller Centers and Carnegie Halls but…not just in NYC…

Give to who can’t do anything for you. Humane societies. Animal Rescue groups. I just gave nearly 100k to the local high school shop class. I will never give to “charities” that say they are helping the hungry, the homeless, or the Africans. They squander everything and things never change. Even when I use to make food for the homeless the ungrateful punks just tossed it in the trash.

It is why I do not give to organized charities., even Catholic ones and I am Catholic. I prefer personal and immediate charity.

Well, i believe in Free Will, but also Providence.

God can use whoever for whatever He pleases, anytime He pleases.

I am reminded of the scene from Joshua chapter 5 where Joshua is battling with the city of Jericho, and sees a man with sword drawn standing on the battlefield he did not recognize.

Joshua asks: Are you with us, or our adversaries?

The reply: Neither, but as the commander of the Armies of the Lord, I have now come.

Joshua realizes he is meeting with God, and falls on his face in worship.

God is righteous and just, and is not “With” us - we are “with” Him - or not.

Joshua 5:13-15

This passage is often understood as a theophany (a manifestation of God) or a direct appearance of THE Angel of the Lord. It serves as a reminder that God’s purpose is not to take sides in human conflicts, but rather for His people to align themselves with His will.
