ANCA condemns Trump’s failure to recognize the Armenian Genocide, calls for U.S. policy reset

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for once again failing to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide in the White House’s annual April 24 statement, marking the 111th anniversary of the crime.

The organization stated that the administration’s position reflects ongoing deference to Turkish pressure, despite longstanding recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. Congress, all 50 states, and previous administrations. It further stated that current U.S. policy is enabling broader regional dynamics that continue to endanger Armenians...

ANCA also pointed to a February 2026 incident involving U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan. A social media post referencing the Armenian Genocide was subsequently edited to remove the term, a move ANCA condemned as a concession to Turkish pressure.

Beyond historical recognition, ANCA linked the issue to recent regional developments, citing Azerbaijan’s 2023 military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), which resulted in the mass displacement of its Armenian population. The organization stated that these actions form part of an ongoing pattern of anti-Armenian policies, including the destruction of cultural heritage and the abuse of prisoners of war.

ANCA renewed its call for a fundamental reset in U.S. policy toward Turkey and the South Caucasus, urging the administration to end what it described as complicity in genocide denial, ensure accountability, and uphold the rights and security of Armenians in the region, including the right of return for displaced populations from Artsakh.

April 24, 2026, marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were systematically killed by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923.

Every day of every year is the anniversary of some notable event. No one can observe them all, not even/ or especially not a very busy sitting president. He may consider appointing a cabinet member whose sole responsibility is observing and ‘celebrating’ at least one dozen special events for every day of the year, barring two weeks he’s on vacation.

I am not diminishing the terrible treatment the Armenians received mostly from the Turks. The Greeks have a very similar complaint, also about the Turks. China has a history where many of their women were abused and tortured by the Japanese during the Nanjing Massacre.

Oppression, or attempts thereof, is unfortunately, the history of the world and a behavior always latent in the DNA of Man.

Our national situation with Turkey appears to be touch and go. Like it or not, good relations...or at least relations with Turkey are important to the security of the United States. The genocide, which occurred more than a century ago is a raw nerve in Turkey. The US government has to get along with the current Turkey and criticizing what happened a long time ago is going to cause an unforced error that may have wide reaching implications for American and Middle Eastern security. This is someone else trying to force the United States to come onto their side while not offering any compensation beyond, “it’s the right thing to do.” The actual right thing to do is whatever is in the interest of the United States.

__________

Why is it up to the U.S. to uphold any rights and security of Armenians in the region?

Like the president is a little busy right now with other things… There are many things going on and this genocide happened a long time ago. exactly why did that genocide happen? Politicians? Islamic barbarians (ottoman)? Voters voting the wrong way? Anyone that is bitching about lack of “US Government” not “acknowledging” something they can do nothing about retroactively is just wanting to muck up today. Yeah maybe say something but what would they like the US to do today?

And why are we responsible to “acknowledge” something that happened over there which did not involve the US?? Seems like we got the worst end of whatever deal was made because the Kardashians are on our soil. Worst. Deal. Evah!

Maybe Trump should call for Armenia to get out of bed with Iran and Russia. Or maybe they should just not tell us what to do at all.

Adolf Hitler apparently referenced the Ottoman Empire’s systematic killings of Armenians as inspiration for his own genocidal ambitions. For Armenians, Genocide-denialism amounts to Holocaust-denialism. And because of their standing as an ancient Christian people and land: they persecution against them as part of historic persecution against Christians as a whole.

Memory of the Holocaust shapes US posture toward the Middle East. So too, does placating Turkey...

There is a historic Armenian quarter in Jerusalem, a sizable population of Armenians in Iran, Iraq etc...

They are a diaspora people because of the chronic upheaval they’ve endured from Ottoman times to Soviet times, to now. And that displacement and fragmentation will continue so long as the status quo remains.

President Trump’s statement is below. Again, the issue is not about tacit acknowledgment that “something happened” - but over the word Genocide. JD Vance’s own tweet about it upon visiting a memorial site in Yerevan had to be deleted.

Saw ANCA in the title and immediately thought of Paul Anka.
