Florida woman claimed driving 123 mph was OK because she was driving 'a Supra'

Blame it on the car. That's what a Florida woman tried to do recently after deputies pulled her over for allegedly driving 123 mph on a highway.

While the driver was going well over the posted speed limit of 50 mph, she was quick to offer an excuse to deputies in body camera footage released by the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

"Honestly, it's just because he has a Supra, and then I thought it was all right, OK to go fast and everything," the woman told police, referring to the red Toyota sports car she had been driving. The car apparently belonged to the male passenger who had been along for the ride.

Jail records show authorities arrested Siria Lopez, a 25-year-old from Bonita Springs, on suspicion of speeding and a DUI around 1 a.m. Thursday, April 9. Lopez posted $3,500 in bond money to the Lee County Sheriff's Office and was released from the county jail later that day. (snip)

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, this was not the first time that specific red Supra was used to reach such high speeds. In December 2024, the male passenger, whom Lopez said in the body camera footage owned the car, was allegedly cited for going 109 mph on the same road and in the same car.

"Last time I saw you, you were doing 110, so I knew you were doing 125," the officer remarked as he handcuffed Lopez.

Lopez was also cited for careless, aggressive driving, modified exhaust and improper turn signal.

With a population of about 50,000, Bonita Springs is near Cape Cod and Fort Myers.

LOL...that sucked!

My best avoided citation was for going too slow. “But officer, we are looking for the best place to stop and fish.” That was along the North Fork of the Yuba River in CA. And it was true!

We took family road trips in the 50s and 60s from upstate NY to visit my mom’s folks and Dad’s brother in Idaho. Back then, there was no speed limit in Montana! You just had to drive safe enough for the conditions. Those were the days!

“If she were actually intoxicated, I would be impressed that she handled the car as well as she did.”

I checked another source. She was intoxicated, she blew a 0.23

Hey, I passed a slow-ass dude on a straightaway today and hit 112 in my Mustang, but who is admitting it? The Vet behind me was right in my draft.

Ford should have stuck with the Galaxy 500 badge.

I had a 1964 Galaxy 500.

My Father had a Galaxy 500.

A high school friend had a 1967 Fairlane 500 (390 ci) that would light up the tires.

What can I say I have an emotional attachment to the car.

I always stay at the speed limit, (plus or minus 20)

Back when cars were cars...
I remember drooling over the 1959 Galaxie 500 Skyliner convertible when it arrived in 1958...

My 80s Camaro Berlinetta’s speedometer went to 110. At 70, it would shake. 80 was the highest I ever got it. 107 horses don’t get you much.

Last week we to cruised Barrett-Jackson in WPB at 110 in a 69 muscle car. Asked the woman beside me if it felt like 110 and her reply was “other than flying by the other cars, it feels like 65”

Fun time in the express lane

I’m sure they meant Cape Coral also. It’s about 20-25 miles away from Bonita Springs. Too many lazy “journalists” out there, and it’s not just journalists anymore. I see incompetence all around.

My mother-in-law had one.

She let her older sister take it to the grocery store with the warning not to put any groceries out side the square sheet mental bucket in the trunk.

I think you can imagine what happened on the return trip from the store.

"I bet he was driving and made her switch seats. She’s that bright."

They are contortionists if they made that happen. You would have to lay both buckets flat back and basically rehearse who would roll on top of who first.

"Fastest I have ever been in a car was 150 mph in a Supra on the Autobahn."

The Supra is badass, but does not handle like Porsche or even an RX-7 past 120.

In the general are where I live, there is a section of interstate with 80 mph speed limit. I can run 70 comfortably in my ‘05 Buick with high miles, but 80 seems a bit fast & I’m sure that some are more than that.
