He was paid only $125,000 a year, though, so he would have been fine to take leave.

Freddie is one of the nicest guys in sports. And a true Christian man, one of several on the Dodgers.

Can anyone imagine Pete Rose requesting a week off for paternity leave? He never would have. That’s because he was a winner.

Keep in mind that Freeman's last child, a boy, was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome in 2024. So his wife can probably use all the support she can get.

One guy at my work has taken FOUR paternity leaves of 3 months each, over a period of 6-7 years. It’s ridiculous and a scam. Newborns sleep like 18 hours a day, he spends a few mins shaking his car keys to amuse the kid and then the rest of the time on a golf course. Meanwhile, everyone else has to pick up the slack.

How him about doing his job? Women gave birth without their husbands in the delivery room, for years. That’s only became a thing over the last 30-40 years. You don’t need to be in the delivery room to support your wife.

I agree. Pay should be based on performance.

You just described everything that’s wrong with the game. The legal framework of major league sports has distorted the market. The league gives these players the economic value they have. There’s no economic value in throwing or hitting a ball without the league.

Stupid comment. Men have been going to the hospital with their wife for eons.

Freddy’s replacement had two home runs last night. Wally Pipp anyone LOL. Dalton Rushing is the back up Catcher, I had no idea he could play 1st. base.

Interesting that Wally Pipp is a footnote to the start of Lou Gehrig career but he was a very good player in his own right. He just didn’t have Gehrgs power, but his early years were in the dead ball era. He actually was the home run leader in the AL in 1916 and 1917 with 12 and 9 dingers LOL. He had a .281 lifetime average and over 1,000 RBI’s

That’s crazy. Is that in addition to his regular vacation? And did the company pay for it? What a scam.

Stupid comment. For most of human history, women were helped through the birthing process by midwives. Men were not part of the process except in instances when complications arose and a physician needed to be consulted.

Giving birth in hospitals is a modern development and only became commonplace in the past 200 years. Prior to that, women typically gave birth at home, with the assistance of a midwife.

Thank you for clarifying that. But why do you think husbands should not go to the hospital for the child’s birth?

I’m not saying they shouldn’t - if doing so is practical (and if the wife wants him there). But there are other priorities that should be taken into account. When you’re performing at the highest level of your profession and are paid handsomely to do so, you have an obligation to your employer (team management) and to your customers (the fans). It’s not asking too much for these players to forego certain things. That’s part of the game. For example, they’re required to do a lot of traveling during the season. Does that mean they miss out on things they might otherwise like to do? Sure. But you know that going in. If you’re not prepared for that, then you should find another profession.

A good parallel is the presidency. Trump is available 24/7 for whatever the job requires, which is how it should be (and which is in stark contrast to Obama and Biden). Now I’m not saying a professional athlete is the same thing as a president, but I’m also not saying athletes should devote 24/7 of their lives to their profession - just that they should live up to their professional commitments. Being with your wife during pregnancy is nice. But it’s a luxury, not an emergency, and a luxury that elite athletes should be expected to forego if it conflicts with the game schedule, IMO.
