An already-expensive trip to the World Cup just got even more costly, as NJ Transit and the FIFA New York New Jersey Host Committee announced fare hikes to attend eight matches at MetLife Stadium this year.
The East Rutherford, New Jersey, stadium will host those matches, beginning June 13 and ending with the final on July 19, but a roundtrip train ticket to and from New York Penn Station and MetLife Stadium will be $150, up from the usual $12.90. Shuttles are also available for $80.
NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri defended the fare hikes on Friday, saying that the ultimate cost to the public transportation company should not be the burden of New Jersey commuters.
"It is an exciting moment for New Jersey to showcase New Jersey's diversity as well as its economic standing in the country and in the world. Equally important, she has said that New Jersey commuters cannot and will not subsidize the movement of fans going to the game, because that would not be fair," Kolluri said, reiterating that the tournament will cost NJ Transit $48 million.
"In order to move 40,000 people and to pay for the cost of $6 million (per game), we have to charge $150."

This sounds totally stupid.
In the US, “soccer” is a kids game to allow then to get some great exercise of mind and body with minimal parental outlay.
Spamburger should drive them around in her own car. Why the hell should the taxpayers pay for it. Let the slut pay.
In NYS, it’s WholeKill....
[Not that spammy person....]
Same thing. Worlthless “Handmaiden tails.”
Color me surprised.
Never thought highly of a sport where the authority figures don’t wear long pants.
“Say, Gunther! Nice knees, ya?”
“What are you gonna do, Wolfgang? Thrust a little card in the air?”
So, maybe, the $150 round trip fare represents the real cost of New Jersey transit, and nobody ever stops to look at that and realize how expensive mass transit is. Just askin.....
For 9 miles from Penn Station or Port Authority Bus Station to Metlife Stadium, $150 per person seems a bit steep.
The free market is a beautiful thing. You can choose to buy or not. I choose to do without $150 rides.
“New Jersey commuters cannot and will not subsidize the movement of fans going to the game, because that would not be fair”
This would be a reason not to charge fans less than the regular fee. It’s absurd as an argument for charging them 12 times more.
Only in America .
There are extra costs ($48 million) associated with moving the extra load of FIFA fans in the short span of time...asking regular commuters/toll road fare payers to foot the bill for the extra overtime/train maintenance/security, etc. is the “unfair” part.
FIFA should underwrite the extra cost to keep the fare at $12.90.
Here is a breakdown of NJ Transit’s funding:
Tickets should be free. Heck, the trains are goin’ there anyway.
On the one hand, it seems outrageous.
On the other hand, maybe it’s to keep out the riff-raff and opportunistic thieves and nuggers.
On the other hand, as someone just said, maybe that is the true, unsubsidised cost of the train.
On the other hand, is Madmani going for kickbacks?
“Elites for the Elite” should be the next DNC bumper sticker.
“So, maybe, the $150 round trip fare represents the real cost of New Jersey transit, and nobody ever stops to look at that and realize how expensive mass transit is. Just askin.....”
Extremely likely. This is why the TBTA tolls are so high. Motorists subsidizing the MTA mass transit bottomless pit.
“…NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri defended the fare hikes Friday, saying the ultimate cost to the public transportation company should not be the burden of New Jersey commuters….”

Jeez, it seems that most of the New Jersey commuter fares are already coming from “OTHER-PEOPLE’S-MONEY”.
“ Thirty-one percent of the revenue in the FY 2026 operating budget comes from customer fares. The remaining amount comes from dedicated funding from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which is $470 million in FY 2026, $789 million from the corporate transit fee and a combination of commercial revenue and state and federal resources.”
So if you pay to drive on the New Jersey turnpike you’re already subsidizing the fares of those taking public transportation.
If I slip the conductor a $20, can he get me there quicker? Is there a tip jar for exceptional service?
