NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city was going to spend a whopping $30 million on his city-run supermarket, with the project expected to take three years to build.
Still, he urged the citizens of New York not to wait for his experiment with Communism but to go ahead and get in line for bread now.
"Remember, we're not using evil capitalism for this," Mamdani told the press. "We're going to give goods like bread at a reasonable price. We just have to know how many people want that, so if everyone lined up now for us to get a count, maybe we can have that many loaves by 2029."
Mamdani said he hoped his supermarket would not only deal a blow to capitalism but also foster more community as people spend time together waiting in lines for sustenance.
"This is the way to do it," Mamdani said. "Sure, capitalism gets people goods cheaply and quickly, but it's at the expense of someone making a profit, which I just can't stand. So get in line for that sweet, sweet bread we'll eventually offer someday. While I can't guarantee you getting in line now means three years from now you'll definitely get bread, I can guarantee no capitalist will profit off you."
When questioned why his supermarket was going to cost way more than the average supermarket but also take longer to build, Mamdani chuckled, "I bet you're all thinking those millions will go to graft and cronies."
Reporters waited for a "but." It never came.
At publishing time, Mamdani had gone to the already-forming bread line at the future site of the market for a photo op.

Three years…. And $70 dollars…. To open one grocery store. Which ironically will have no goods within 24 hours of opening. It’s effing laughable.
That’s blow milk out your nose funny.
Northerners and others moving from blue states to mine ticks me off to no end.
Instead of fixing their own they run away, squat here and reap the benefits of what we here have taken literally decades to build and they have absolutely NO skin in that game.
ROTFL! I love the BEE. “That’s funny. I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there.” -Larry the Cable Guy.

"Laughable" is not quite the word I would use.

That part is NOT satire
Meanwhile he should run a little bodega out of Gracie Mansion to show his good intent. Cigs, lottery tickets, soda, that kind of thing...
A joke yes but how much of the $30 million will end up stolen ?
This clown doesn’t see what his is setting New Yorkers up with; massive food shortages. What a fool!
Ain’t Communism wonderful.
lol. Thats a great one today!
$30 million and it won’t be ready for almost three years?
If I proposed that to any board of directors they would ask for my ID, and laugh me out of the building.
And it will be “rent free”? As is any building you build on your own. But the $30M is coming from somewhere. And that is always going to come with interest payments. So that’s “rent.”
These people simply assume their constituents are financial morons.
